Another of the early recipes for Burton Bridge Brewery. This beer has been brewed since the early 1980's and remains as popular as ever. XL being the Roman numerals for 40 depicts the A.B.V of 4.0% as well as the play on words as this beer truly excels. Hops used are Challenger and Target with Target also being used as a late copper hop.

Cask at the Hole In The Wall, Southsea, UK on 16th October 2009. Amber with very small whitish head which quickly dissipates to leave a ring of foam round the edge. Strong malt aromas - biscuit/cookie notes before a kick featuring hop strongly shrouded in maltiness with a bitter sweet finish on a smooth, slightly creamy mouthfeel. Pleasant pint.

Cask handpull at County Hotel, JDW, Ashford. Deep copper colour with bubbly lasting head. Really good English hop/malt nose. Excellent supping best bitter. Slightly full in mouth with drying hop on end. Some toffee, clean, drinkable, slightly tart. Best bitter as it should be. Just a tad too wet in the mouth
