Our Penny Black IPA packs a mighty hop punch with oodles of Columbus, Ekuanot and Sorachi Ace hops. Our classic IPA malts are joined by darker roasted malts which not only make this IPA black, but also impart a rich roast flavour.

Can from Water Into Beer, Brockley. Aroma has malty dark chocolate with an underlying creaminess, cut through with spliffy herbs and a touch of bitter fruit, before coconut appears. Opaque dark cola brown. Creamy frothy light beige head. Charcoal/black chocolate bitter core. A sweet edged sour stone fruit streak. Spicy/herby throughout. The sourness ramps up into the finish but it's complimented by the bitterness. Light-medium bodied. Slick. A little lick of cream. Flat-average carbonation. Enjoyable - manages to find a fulcrum for the bitterness and sourness, even if it doesn't blow me away like Mig-29.

42nd Floor Tasting. Thanks to Leighton. Very hazy brown beer, thin tan head. Palate is airy and dry, decent fine carbonation. Dry dark malts, earthy dry, with dry coffee and roast biiterness. Pine and traces of Sorachi lemon and citric fruits. Fairly harsh floral bitter dry finish. Tasty but too dry.

Bottle shared at level 42 Canary wharf tasting. 5/4/2016. Many thanks to Leighton for this one. Hazed mahogany brown coloured pour with a lasting light tan head. Aroma is airy grainy, tangy, citrus, a little funky. Hint of coconut on the nose. Flavour is composed of bitter black roasted malt, some coconut sorachi, woody funky sour. Palate is frothy carbonation, bitter malt malts semi sweet. Interesting enough.

Bottle at level 42. It pours near black with a thick light tan head. The aroma is pine needles, herbal, fennel, creamy, charred wood, chocolate and jammy dark fruits. The taste is bitter, earthy roast, charred pine needles, very dry, slightly burnt notes and tar with a very dry finish. Medium body and moderate, foamy carbonation. Alright.

Bottle shared in London - picked up at Beermoth. Pours deep brown with a creamy tan head. Burnt wood in the nose, faint cocoa, scorched earth. Light to medium sweet flavor with charred cedar, baking cocoa, charred pine, more earth. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation and massaging carbonation. Dry finish, light alcohol warmth, more bittersweet baking cocoa, earthy bitterness. Not bad overall.

Bottle at the level 42 tasting V1.5 05/04/16, thanks to LKS. Mahogany brown with a decent tan swirl. Nose is earthy hop, spice, light perfume, pine, toasted brown sugar. Taste comprises caramel, mineral notes, Sorachi scorch, toasted brown bread, earthy hop, light pine. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, drying close peppered with Sorachi hop bitterness. Decent enough CDA if a toch earthy/dirty.

Manchester Beer & Cider Festival 2016. Black ale with a strength. Its tropical fruitiness is dominant in both aroma and taste but thereโs a dark malt influence in here too. Thereโs a bitterness apparent as well.
