An historical brew, harking back to an era when barley was cured over open fires and beer was stored in oak.

Bottle from Oddbins. Appearance - deep brown with orange chinks. Lovely off white head. Nose - smoke and biscuit. Hint of caramel but not much. Taste - all smoke and biscuit this time but almost all of that is smoke. Palate - close to medium bodied. Smoky dry middle and finish. Overall - good if a bit one dimensional.

Cask at the Water poet, Liverpool street, London. Not a bad attempt at a gently smoked brown.

Hand-pulled cask pint on 7th Dec 2018; in the Water Poet, London. Dark brown with a ruby hue in bright light, the head a beige affair. Smoky malty molasses in both the nose and taste, getting more bitter towards the end of each sip. Nice change from golden citrusy beers.

Bottle from Oddbins, Clifton, Bristol. Chestnut in colour, with a big, frothy, off-white, head. Aroma of toasty malts, red berries and charred oak. Full mouth feel, with more toastiness, burnt toffee, dried fruits and a warming finish. Enjoyable.

Donker bruin bier met stevige schuimkraag. Smaak is ietwat romig, licht bitter met iets van rook en koffie.

Bottle shared at the brewery (09/09/2017) - dark brown pour with a medium tan head. Toasted, roasted and smoked malty, some caramel and toffee sweetness, has a pronounced smoked meaty bite into the finish.
