India Pale Ale has been a misused term. Not anymore – we believe this brew is as near to an original IPA as it is possible to get. 200 years ago an IPA would have used only local ingredients which must have been grown with no pesticides or artificial fertilisers (so organic). It would not only have had to ‘keep well’ but to improve with keeping, even in a hot climate. To achieve this authentically, we’ve introduced a wild yeast culture derived from the local environment. We have then used Suffolk well water, organic barley (pale malt) and finally hopped heavily with English organic Goldings (70IBU), it is then aged for 4 months in organic whisky barrels. The result is close to what would have quenched the thirst of East India Company’s hierarchy in the 1820’s and the Raj later on. On the palate it has a pithy dry bitterness, mild alcohol, British wild yeast funk, subtle sweetness and sparkle. In our opinion it is delicious and authentic!

330ml bottle from the Beer Hive. Pours clear golden with no real head. These guys are very hit and miss on the bottle conditioning front. More misses in my experience so far. Brett and funky wood aromas dominate. Some pineapple there. Taste is sour, funky, then the goldings kick through with their almost soapy fruitiness. Interesting.

330ml bottle purchased at the Merton Beer Festival and drunk at home. Clear gold colour lasting thin bubbly white head. Sour aroma like an unblended lambic. This is unbelievable. It’s not an IPA it’s a hoppy unblended lambic. I love the aroma, I love the hops (could be toned down like the aged hops the Belgian lambics use). It’s amazing. I British lambic that has hops popping out of it. The hops are English. It’s amazing. When I thought I had everything this amazed and surprised me.

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines; hazy golden yellow pour with a thin white head, aroma has sour action, taste has an unexpected sour edge, along with pineapple chunks, it’s great that original IPAs were bretted to fuck.

Hazy gold beer, a few white bubbles. Palate is semi dry with very mild carbonation. Thin malts. As Fin says (below) there is a pleasant ciderish vibe about this beer and it goes well with the mellow orange peel hops. A bitter bretty thing in the background. A little savoury on the light dry finish. Interesting beer this - is it close to the original IPA? Well I can imagine this going down very well on a hot dusty day in India. Intriguing and tasty.

Bottle from Beer Gonzo webshop consumed at home Thursday 18th August 2016 whilst cooking Chicken with Coriander Chutney Curry and Lol making a Dal Loz reckons that the aroma (funky in my opinion) but Loz thinks it’s really cidery but only subtle in terms of the appleyness. It’s quite flat in appearance, there are a few bubbles creating a little white rim but lacks just a little in terms of carbonation. The colour is lovely, there is a gold glow and it sits somewhere between dark gold and orangey/gold in colour. Mmhhh...yes this is funky in the mouth, I need to put some Parliament on to swig this to, it’s a little tart and farmyardy but hoppy in a British Hop rustic sense, really tangy, Loz has a point it’s like a lost cousin sitting between an IPA and a cider. Enjoying this, nice beer and a very interesting story about the brewery on their site, I’d been to the old brewery (brewpub) a few years ago, we stopped in the camper but this new brewery looks a rather more exciting project, good luck to them.
