Pouring as black as pitch the aroma is flower borders and aniseed balls, and taking a mouthful you find a solid walnut sideboard coated in treacle tart, pine sap and toffee brittle.

There’s some roasted nuts and lots of liquorice, along with a sharp brittle hedgerow snap from the hops that cleans up the stickiness of the malting and has you reaching for another glug.
Das ist sehr gut.

Bottleshare at Chez Smith. Thanks to Leighton for the can. Hazy red - amber beer, small pale tan head. Palate is light and dry, modest carbonation. Smooth dark malts, mild roast. Dry dark fruits. Mild hop spice and bitterness. Smooth dry finish. Lacks a bit of hop brightness.

Can from John’s Off Licence in St Ives. This was not a "classic" black IPA. There was a nice texture of malt, but quite a sharp and bitter flavour of hops underlying the beer. Dare I say that it was a bit watery? It was ok, but not my most favourite thing.

Can shared in London / picked up at Eebria. Pours clear reddish-brown with a creamy tan head. The nose has some pleasant brown bread, mild toasted pine, a little earth. Light sweet flavour with a little pithy citrus, burnt toast, light ash, orange peel, a little dry cocoa, minerals. Light-medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Finishes with toasted brown bread, cocoa, burnt earth. Basic but not bad.
