I don't know why I'm surprised by the low ratings here, because I shouldn't be. This beer is subtle, soft, and balanced, instead of the impies RB loves, you know, boozy overwrought palate wreckers. This one instead is a throwback to before the extreme beer movement, coming in at a modest 8% ABV. Straightforward bourbon on the nose, oak and vanilla and tannin, light roast. Semi-dry, with bitter chocolate, coffee, and bourbon flavors. Soft mouthfeel. Lightly roasted finish.

Bodney Towers bottle share. Thanks to Leighton. Opaque dark brown beer, massive tan head. Palate is airy and semi dry, decent fine carbonation. Fluffy and thin dark malts, trace of dark chocolate. A whisper of tangy dark fruits. Smooth semi finish. A thin stout with very mild barreling.

A black mahogany brown coloured pour with a frithy tan head .Aroma is nutty, woody, pranline, sweet frosties, creal. Flavour is composed of medium sweet, honey, caramel, toffee, praline, brown caramel. Palate if super frothy carabonation. Condensed milk.

On tap at Goodwood, pours black with a small beige head. Aroma brings out light bourbon and subtler roasted malt. Flavour is pretty laid back for the style, with fairly subtle bourbon barrels, a little vanilla and toasted malt. Medium-bodied and fairly easy on the assertiveness. Nice stuff.

Bottles shared in Hackney - picked up in Texas. Pours clear, deep brown with a creamy, tan head. The aroma has some milk chocolate.ate, light roast, dark fruits. Medium sweet flavour with low bitterness, brown bread, sugary chocolate, raisins. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Sweet finish, more sugary chocolate, berries. Good fun.

Sample at Darkness Brewing for Cincinnati Beer Week on 06/23/2017. Dark brown color with a medium thin light beige head that dissipates quickly t an outer ring. Small patches of lacing. Oak, malt and coffee aroma. Medium body with flavors of charred malt, bourbon and vanilla. The finish is a little watery with an oaky and malty aftertaste. Decent overall.

Bottle as pictured. Smells like a typical impy stout. First taste is impy stout as well but its a little more civilized compared to many domestic impy stouts, I almost find this to be acceptable. Does not really seem to be 8% so I guess it hides its alky well even tho any impy stout is simply a punch in the face, including this one. Decent co2 level in this one. The barrel aged thing does not really come thru on this and I’m glad; if you want whisky, drink whisky, if you want beer drink beer, if you want whisky in beer, have a boilermaker. In the end this is an impy stout I can live with but still is a kick in the ass.

Undrinkable. Looks decent, smells better, but either the brewery released a bad batch of beer or this recipe’s a nightmare. Starts with a tart lemon acidity that grows metallic and overbearing, then morphs into a burnt chocolate-covered cherry finish with an utter lack of either bourbon or oak. Horrible. Yet all this awfulness does cover up the 8% ABV fairly well. So there’s that, I guess.

Total Wine Fairfax bottle: pours black with a beige head. Aroma is light bourbon, vanilla, roast, toffee. Taste is fairly light and uncomplex for an Imperial Stout. Hops are relatively subdued. Taste is kind of sweet. Bourbon is light and not overwhelming. Is what it is.
