Specially brewed using an infusion of Chinese bruised ginger root and botanical extracts, Old Tom Ginger is a lively breed indeed. It has a delicious purring warmth for those colder winter nights…and a refreshing summer coolness when served over ice.

330ml bottle. Good (expected) hit of ginger as soon as poured, dark amber with thin white head. Tastes very sweet and syrupy with a little spicy ginger afterkick on the back of the mouth. Good, but not as good as the chocolate version.

Bottle from Bottle Barn in Santa Rosa, CA. Gotta love a ginger tom. Rhubarb! Pours ruddy dark brown with a creamy beige head. Wonderful ginger aroma. Med body or close. Flavor is ginger with fairly roasted malt. Seems to have a little extra spiciness than ginger, and the malt is perhaps a low key thing. Still,it’s a beautiful thing.

Pours mahogany into a Sam glass. Tan head with little retention recedes leaving no lacing to hug rim. Sweet ginger aromas. Crisp with sweet ginger and caramel upfront turning to spicy ginger in the lasting finish.

Pours dark ruby brown with a lasting off-white head.Nose shows overriding ginger with sweet biscuity notes underneath along with a little golden syrup. Pretty much like ginger snaps.Flavours are pretty unpleasant in comparison, with astringent and sharp herbal notes dominating. Lots of ginger. Doesn’t seem to have the malt and body to carry the massive strength of the ginger.

As Marks & Spencer Ginger Ale. Amber colour, large tan head. Nose is lots of ginger, grass, soap. Flavour is massive ginger and toilet cleaner. Very artificial ginger flavours. Detergent chlorine all over the place. Absolutely repulsive. Sharp gingery and soapy finish. Disgusting.

Great dark red dark brown color, thick white foamy head. Incredibly strong ginger smell, dear god, I don’t like this, no, I hate this in a beer. Ginger dominates the taste as well. Carbo and body ok. For someone who likes ginger (in a beer), this is probably the ultimate number one beer ever. Just don’t count me in.

02/06/2011 33cl bottle @ Klaas' place - BB: n/a (2011-244) Thanks to Klaas for sharing the bottle!
Clear dark amber to reddish brown coloured ale, practically no head. Aroma: very sweet, malty, caramel, very bready, bit vinous, raisins. Amazingly complex aroma. MF: no carbon, medium body. Taste: sweet malts, very spicy, ginger (no shit), citrus. Aftertaste: a bit dry, ginger prickling the tongue. Something different and although I probably could never finish a bottle by myself, it's something new and refreshing and I like it.

33cl bottle from M&S Chelmsford Railway station. Very dark brown clear colour with big beige head. Ginger beer aroma. I was going to say a bit of a flabby ginger beer as it isn’t as tight as some of the ones I’ve had, but then I guess the dark ale.is what I am tasting. Not sure the combination entirely works. Some sweet malt with the stem ginger. I can see the idea, but it doesn’t quite work in the bottle.

Bottle from Sainsbury. I love this little bottle with the embossed lettering, makes the beer feel special. Plus I like Old Tome and I like ginger, so all ticks so far. Clear ruby, thin off white head. Stem ginger and a kind of burnt brown sugar aroma. Like crystallised ginger in mouth. It’s a very moreish beer, the ginger is clear, but seems integrated and the underlying beer is as solid as Manchester Town Hall. Very good.
