(Draught at Beer Temple, Amsterdam, 18 Sep 2016) Reddish amber colour with creamy, beige head. Malty, fruity nose with notes of caramel, red fruit, hints of smoke and anise. Malty, fruity taste with caramel, candy sugar, red fruit, orange peel, a touch of chocolate and a gentle spicy bitterness in the finish. More than medium body, with a certain sweetness. Fairly complex, but well balanced and tasty. Quite nice.

On tap at OIBF’16. Brown colour, beige head. Aroma of weak malts, spices, some dark fruits and cocoa. Flavour is likewise. Boring and plain, even a bit watery, spicy Dubbel.

Sampled from tap at the Oedipus International Beer Festival 2016. Hazy, reddish brown with an off-white head. Sweetish-malty, slightly roasty aroma of dark chocolate, coffee, nuts and some spices. Sweetish-malty, slightly roasty and a little spicy taste of caramel, dark chocolate, cinnamon and some nuts, followed by a short, slightly bitter finish. Medium body, slightly creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Okay.

On tap at the Alibi Room, pours a deep dark reddish amber with a small beige head. Aroma brings out dark fruits, some toffee and bready malts. Flavour brings out a good mix of Belgian yeast, dark fruits, toffee and bready malts. Fair amount of heat showing to this too, but it creates a nice warming effect rather than detracting booziness. Nice stuff - better than average for American dubbels.

Draught at Alibi Room, Vancouver
Dark amber color, clean. Moderately sweet, but lean, it has enough caramel and malt flavor, quite good, the alcohol is not apparent, the bitterness is on the low side; knowing that there is star anise, I guess that the light soap touch comes from that, while the cacao leaves a light coffee trace that is perceived only with the first sips.
Not bad, solid, although, of course, without the harmony or depth of true Belgian beers.
