[Cask at the Three Guineas, Reading] Deep amber (darker than you’d expect for a summer football beer) with a moderate white head. Caramel by the bucketload, plus autumn leaves, cough mixture, chocolate and gravy in the rather sweet flavour. Some old, muddy hop bitterness does creep through in the syrupy finish. At least this isn’t as bland as Bateman’s normal efforts, but it’s a sticky, ghastly mess instead. England Expects better than this...

Cask at the Earl of Beaconsfield, Cambridge, as England Expects in South Africa. A simple bitter (as befits the average World Cup follower); amber with a dense white head; syrupy caramel malt flavour, and a rather musty hop finish. Come on Inger-land, you can do better than this.

Cask at the City Arms, Manchester (August 07). Medium dark reddish brown colour with a fine, tan head. Lovely to look at. Aroma of caramel, dark fruits, raisins. Rich amber malt flavor with fruits galore. Good hops, too. Excellent balance. Very rich, with medium body. A bit sweet, caramel / toffee with fruit. Dry fruit and hop finish. Good stuff.

Cask at JDW. Penny Black, Bicester 22-09-07 Poured dark golden, with tight white head. Some light hoppy notes but quite weak aroma, tasted quite sweet heavily leaning towards vanilla with sweet malts. Not bad as, one trick ponies go.

Gravity dispense at the Miners’ Arms Summer Beer Festival, St Werburgh’s Bristol 6/8/07. Deep amber colour with a slight, off-white head. Aroma of red fruit, caramel and grassy hops. Flavour started sweet before a long hoppy finish. very enjoyable.
