I haven’t had an Otaru Pilsner since I was at their taproom in Hokkaido years ago: Otaru Pilsner 5% Rich golden orange in color with a honey bready aroma with a soft herbal hop bitterness. Quite full bodied and the taste is the same with sweet honeyed malt then a crisp semi-spicy herbal finish. I prefer the Helles but this is nice too.

Tap at Beer Horn. Golden colour, crazy horn glass, white bubbly head. Aroma is grainy, floury. Taste is decent, refreshing, good graininess, light creamy sweetness, nice. I was a bit toasted at this stage, but liked it.

Bottle from Tokyu bottle shop in front of Sapporo station. Pours a clear gold with a nice white head. Nose is light floral with some grain ad grassy hops. Taste is more if the same. Great balance. Light pepper on the finish with a bit of stone fruit as it warms. --- Beer merged from original tick of Pilsner on 14 Jul 2015 at 09:38 - Score: 7

I originally gave this beer a 1.6, as I bought a bottle in Tokyo and Otaru beer clearly doesn’t travel well. At the brewery, this had a full on floral nose with toasted malts. Hoppy start, but then becomes more balanced. A bit sweeter than I was expecting. Moderately bitter finish. Excellent on draft at the brewery.

[Bottled] Hazy pale yellow, rich head. Distinct grassy nose. Dry and freshly malty with soft mouthfeel. Bready malt together with newly mown grass makes up most of the flavour. Lingering bitter finish. More similar to the softer south German pilseners than the drier and crisper north German ones.
