Tap at Ichiya. Pleasant aroma of roast. Touch of coffee, chocolate there too. Taste has initial roasty bite then smooth chocolatey finish. Pretty nice.

Draft at Beer Pub Ichi Ya, Kyoto. Black with a tan head. Aroma of roast, dark chocolate and coffee. Flavour is moderate sweet and bitter. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Dark brown, thin head. Chocolatey but perhaps a bit light, watery in the finish. Arguably a dark mild (strong) is the best way to think about this beer.

Under the ex-Syuzan Kaido brewer I’d heard they’d done a good job raising the bar for their stout. When I had it a Craft Beer Live 2016 it was dark black with a rusty tan head. The aroma was an enticing cocoa. Medium bodied with a chewy mouthfeel and solid bitter chocolate, cocoa, umami flavor. Good.

Tap at Kyoto Festa. Lovely black, shiny, with a lacy head with legs. Rich cocoa, chocolate nose, some coffee and cream. Tasty flavors of coffee, chocolate, cream and a touch of soy sauce. Just a bit thin, but overall very nice. Headed in a good new direction.
