12oz bottle from Wegmans, Buffalo, NY. An amber pour with a tight cream head; malty aroma with some piney hops; well balanced mix of rich malts and piney hops; and a rounded finish. Perhaps more an English ESB style than an IPA.

Bottle shared at Beer Market Jaffa. Better Beer Of The Month Club. Hazy orange with a white head. Aroma of hops, a bit stale, piney, a bit leafy and a bit citric, and some malt. Flavor has some sweetish chewy malt (not too sweet though) and nice hoppiness, a bit piney, with strong bitterness. Pretty chewy rounded mouthfeel. Could be fresher, but still a good one.

It looks like it is contract brewed by Cold Springs MN. 750ml bottle.
A hazy amber colour, there’s a good 2 finger head of foam sitting atop. Pretty impressive lacing too.
Gosh, the hoppy notes I get in the smell remind me sooo much of the once proud and beautiful XXX..hop oils and uber pine nose that’s unreal.
The taste? Like a stronger version of XXX in its heyday. Wow! Hop oils that exude pine needles, or cones if you prefer. Earthy earthy malt that does not get in the way of the hoppy goodness. A bit more balanced than the old XXX but in every way, just as if not more than enjoyable as it was.
Medium body with carbonation perfecto, this is having me giggling up a storm. Old school but in this case, old school is kicking arse. My hat is off to Cold Springs BIG TIME!
I got 2 more bottles of this nectar of the gods. Not enough! --- Beer merged from original tick of Ballantine IPA on 04 Dec 2014 at 17:21 - Score: 10. Original review text: 4.9
Hop oils with the uber pine and earthy malt is just killing it for me. I had to buy this online but M.O.O.N., I could not have spent

Quite mild ipa aroma from the tap. Look is significantly darker than the pale lager. Was expecting a strong thing but this is pretty well behaved. Certainly on the lighter side of an ipa, makes it enjoyable fer me. Stranger in taste than GF jibe fer sure. Yes, a rather leathery blunt finish, somewhat rude ipa finish but certainly not like in yer face.

750 ml bottle poured into a tulip. Slightly hazy golden orange with two fingers of off-white head. Nice lacing. Aromas of pine, floral notes, citrus, toasty notes. Tastes of toasty and nutty notes, caramel, citrus, malty notes. Medium body with a dry finish. Pretty malty mouthfeel. Decent.

Whole Foods Bowery, NYC 12 ounce ($3): Pours light amber with a white head. Aroma is hops. They are somewhat nondescript as they are not particularly citrusy, resinous, or piny. Taste is malty with a nice bitter undertone. This isn’t bad. It probably is nothing like the original Ballantine IPA (which I assume was more like an English ESB), but hey, at least they are trying.

Pours Amber into a shaker. White head with medium retention recedes to mottle surface. Resin aromas. Soft with sour caramel upfront turning to resin in the lasting finish.
