A dangerously smooth imperial stout starts with aromas of chocolate, coffee, and dark cherries and follows with flavors of mocha, earthy roasted malt, and dried fruit.

Jet black pour with a medium thin light tan head that dissipates quickly to a dense film. Small patches of lace. Smoked malt, chocolate and fruit in the nose. Medium to full body with flavors of charred malt, bittersweet chocolate and a touch of dark fruit. The finish is mildly smokey with a chocolate malt aftertaste. Above average overall.

Rich deep dark brown coloured body with a thin light brown head that fades very quickly. Aroma of smoke, anise, licorice, roasted malt, earth, caramel and a bit of peat. Medium-bodied; Assertive toffee and smokey flavour with some soy sauce and a bit of roasted malt with chocolate sweetness on the end. Aftertaste shows the sweetness up front with a mild and subdued chocolate and roasted malt note along with the soy sauce and funky flavours and a lot of anise and licorice are still the strongest flavours here. Overall, a decent Imperial Stout with a little funky flavours and some subdued sweetness, but the anise is a bit too strong and the soy sauce hits too hard still, with a light-ish body for the style and not enough complexity around. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 25-July-2015 for US$2,59 sampled at home in Upstate New York on 08-April-2017.

12 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 12/28/2017. Pours dense pitch black color with a small dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a light amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toffee, dark bread, toasted biscuit, and nuttiness; with lighter notes of smoke, charcoal, raisin, plum, cherry, fig, date, licorice, herbal, pepper, and roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/black/roast/bready malt and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of huge dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toffee, dark bread, toasted biscuit, and nuttiness; with lighter notes of smoke, charcoal, raisin, plum, cherry, fig, date, licorice, herbal, pepper, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate roast/char and herbal/spicy hop bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toffee, dark bread, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, light smoke/char/dark fruit, herbal, pepper, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/black/roast/bready malt and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; with a great roast/hop bitter/sweet balance, and zero cloying/acrid/astringent flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering hop/char bitterness. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy/silky, and lightly slick/sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Mildly increasing warmth of 11% after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic imperial stout! All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/black/roast/bready malt and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the big ABV. Definitely the best non-BA Odd Side stout. Super rich and complex, and never acrid on roast malt complexity. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bottle. Pours Pours black with a grayish brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma is full of strong dark grains with a bit of dark fruit, roasted malts and a hint of booze. Flavor is also full of strong dark grains with a good amount of roasted malts and a bit of coffee that leads to a slightly dry finish.

12 oz bottle. Pours black with a tan ring of a head. Great creamy mocha cocoa aroma with lots of toffee, molasses, raisin, vanilla coffee. Hard to place, but great. Flavor is creamy vanilla and cocoa, raisin and roasty coffee, anise. Cleaner palate than most of this style. Different from other imperial stouts, certainly, and very tasty.

On tap at Odd Side. Deep brown body with little head and lovely chocolate and coffee aromas. Damn good. Heavy chocolate and coffee on the palate. Nicely balanced and just all around wonderful.
