IPA (India Pale Ale) has come a long way since the sad days of the British Empire. Boundary Bay’s was one of the first in the Northwest. The big malt backbone, juicy Amarillo hops and assertive bitterness make this a true classic.

Draft: Poured a hazy orange with a creamy off white head. Aroma was citrus and hops. Taste is decent hops, citrus fruit and blended malts to balance.

Sample at the Tap House Grill in Seattle. The beer pours a slightly cloudy orange-amber color with a medium white head that diminishes quickly. Rings of lacing. Piney hops and malt in the nose. Medium body with flavors of citrus, piney hops and malt. The finish is moderately bitter with a short hoppy aftertaste. Above average overall.

A golden IPA with a thin white head. In aroma, a sweet butterscotch malt with faint grassy hops. In mouth,a sweet malt with light treacle, grassy piney hops, a tad sweet but good. On tap at Alibi Room, March 22, 2012.

You know, I’m baffled - that a brewpub in Bellingham would manage to gain such attention! Not that this is a bad thing, but still, it’s an oddity to be sure. And I can’t complain... yet. This is my second bomber of theirs, probably the last for a long time given my locale. Tossed into a tall glass the carbonation pushes the beer up well into a fine head, on top of a bright brown body (ooh, I had one of those once. But on a different species). The aroma is all sharp hops, as an IPA should be perhaps, but lacking complexity. The flavour is a good hoppy amount with a slight hint of malt and a huge bitter and dry finish. Too bitter and dry for me, in fact - I’m puckering my lips. Gotta go find a bottle of water. This is a good sipping brew though, and certainly a high-quality IPA.

2014-04-21, draught at Lockspot Fish & Chips, Seattle, 7-4-7-4-15=37
Cloudy light amber color with creamy head. Solid, balanced, with some bitter oranges. Goes well with the fish & chips. Old school IPA.
2011-08-03, bottle from Brewery Creek, Vancouver, 7-4-7-4-16=38
Cloudy amber color, with a medium sized creamy head. Aroma of malt, caramel, toffee and cereals; later it gets a bit dusty. Good body structure; there is a pleasant flavor of malt and toffee, with moderate residual sweetness; strong hopping, resiny and also quite fruity, finishing with a sweaty hop touch. Long final.
A pleasant, sweetish IPA.

Entirely decent IPA. Solid pine/citrus/floral hop aroma, though a bit middle of the road. Decently dry, not too bitter in the finish. Drinkable and good. Relatively smooth feel. Some light touches of caramel malt. This isn’t a great IPA but entirely satisfactory as a regular rotation beer.
