IPA (India Pale Ale) has come a long way since the sad days of the British Empire. Boundary Bay’s was one of the first in the Northwest. The big malt backbone, juicy Amarillo hops and assertive bitterness make this a true classic.

On draft at Collins Pub, Seattle WA, enjoyed in the company of after4ever. Hazy cloudy orange yellow pour with a nice egg white head. Aroma of citrus and pine hops, and a hint of mellow sweetness. Taste is great, very fresh grapefruit-orange citrus with a slightly resinous body, and a clean bitter finish.

On tap at Brouwer’s Café in Seattle. Pours copper with gold edges, white head and spotty lacing. The aroma brings forth fresh grapefruit hops mixed with lightly roasted malts and some breadiness. Overall the aroma is a bit light. The taste only has a hint of breadiness that goes well with caramelized malts and formidable grapefruit hop bitterness. The malts and grainy breadiness add a welcomed dimension to the flavor but the hops are the main player here.

Draught at the brewpub. Pale amber. Rich aroma of lychee and grapefruit. Sweet with clean mouthfeel and near full body. Finished of with fruits and pleasant bitterness. This was the one beer I actually liked here. There is enough hops to cover the malt profile that I really don’t appreciate.

On tap at the brewpub Medium light brown. hazy amber with a very small off white head and traces of lacing. Up front hoppiness in the aroma and as expetcted in the citrusy flavors as well. Well bittered and a medium body.

Draught, at the brewery
Cloudy. Light amber colour. Woody, citrusy hop aroma - all hops. The body is a little thin and malts undeveloped. Very woody and bitter - but not balanced. Definitely would want to see this one less attenuated.

Supremely balanced between biscuity malt and hops, just the perfect IPA in the mouth. Then the finish is weak and not bitter enough. They got it half right anyways.
