IPA (India Pale Ale) has come a long way since the sad days of the British Empire. Boundary Bay’s was one of the first in the Northwest. The big malt backbone, juicy Amarillo hops and assertive bitterness make this a true classic.

Medium orange with a white head. Citrus and malt are the only real thing going on here. On the sweeter, fuller IPA side of the scale. Round, medium thick body. Good.

Draft pour at Beer Authority. Pours a thick, cloudy copper color with a fading, head. Hop front aroma. Initially sweet malt flavor with a long transition to a bitter hop finish. Maybe a bit too bitter, if your preference is anything like mine. A pretty standard IPA here. Good overall.

Draught at Marciero. Sweet and malty, with lots of citrus and sweet oranges, and a bit of tropical fruit. Light enough, easy to drink, and tasty without being surprising.

Slightly hazy copper coloured body with a nice two centimetre tan head. Aroma of apricots, malt, pungent citrusey and floral hops and bunches of honey at the end. Medium-bodied; Assertive grassy and herbal hop notes with a good malt balance and a lightness to the finish. Aftertaste shows some citrus and light pine flavours, a little honey and caster sugar sweetness, a hint of alcohol and good malt presence. Overall, a nice lighter-than-average IPA with a good hop flavour and an even better balance. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Bottleworks in Seattle, Washington on 11-January-2013 for US$4.49 sampled at home in [the real] Washington on 03-March-2013.

Update - Bitter and woody, without any of the sweet floral notes of yesteryear. I am sure my tastes have changes as well. Bottle - Nice balanced citrus hop aroma. Foamy white long lasting head and a bubble clear amber hue. Perfume hopy taste with a candy like sweetness. A bitterness that is midway through making this a very mellow and pleasant session IPA. Update - Draft at brewery, as good. Speaks well to the QA.
