Our winter beer is a dark and heartwarming beer with a full pure, slightly sweet taste and long soft bittery aftertaste. The ingredients are: seven types of malt (including rolled oats), two types of Belgian hops, brewing water and yeast. This is the ideal beer to make a cold and chilly winter evening cosy.

33 cl (11.2 oz) bottle, $3.49 at Binnyβs, July 09. Probably not so much a "winter warmer" as a simple seasonal; but Belgian style, so you get high malt and alcohol content anyway. A sweet malty smell starts up as soon as I open the cap. Notes of brown sugar, black cherry, currant jam, and sloe gin. The initial pour, into a narrow tulip glass, brings up a lot of fizzy bubbles along the side, leading to nice spritzy head like a C-O-L-A co-ho-la. Taste follows up the aroma with sugary sweetness, more traces of the fruit flavors from the nose, A bit of aged hop comes out late in the glass. Some of the yeast from the refermentation is present, too, so pour this bottle carefully if you want to avoid the dregs. Sweetness never takes over, which could come easily when this beer has a soda sized amount of carbonation. Instead, juniper contributes to a slightly dry finish that keeps this beer enjoyable.

Plums, spices, x-mas pudding in the nose. Flavors of chocolate, cherries, caramel, dark fruits, some gin. Very complex, with a good roasted bitterness as well. A sweet pudding-like beer with great balance. Excellent.

bottle, pours dark brown, tall tan head. Aromas of maple syrup and brown sugar dominate. Light body, starts with some dark malt and fades to a hop bitterness that is balanced with light spice, liqorice and a moderate alcohol burn in the finish. This is good stuff.

Deep clear brown ale with burgundy hues, and a thick oka head. A pleasant herbal aroma, slight caramel, currants and alcohol. In mouth, a sweet caramel with nice light maple, light hopping, cointreau overtones, lacking a bit in body, but overall, a very nice x-mas ale with warming alcohol. Bottle at Oud Arsenaal, 1.90 Euro, Nov. 2006.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a thinnish light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, pit fruits, raisins, nuts and a bit of cherries. Medium-bodied; Strong malty flavour up front with potent pit fruit sweetness and a decent amnout of yeast following behind. Aftertaste shows some malt, a lot of sweetness and a nice flavour. Overall, a good belgie - definitely worth trying...and it looks like you can find it in the U.S.A! I sampled this 33 cL bottle purchased from Beer Mania in Bruxelles, Belgium on 28-December-2007, sampled on 13-September-2008 from the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
