Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy Autumn
Score
6.32
ABV: 6.9% IBU: - Ticks: 29
Earthy, rich and steeped in autumn’s magic: it’s an ale of change. This potent infusion is haunted by memories of summer and the first frost on abandoned fields.
Jinx prepares the bones for snow. It has the glint of golden maples at peak and finishes light as an ode to the fading sun. A bit of peat-smoked malt imparts a subtle hint of smoke that reminds us of fall’s bonfires.

Thanks go out to slob for sending this one my way! A large, frothy mocha head sits on top of this clear, dark amber beer. Lightly malty yeasty aroma, but little smoke. Starts with some malty sweetness and finishes with a spicy tang in the finish that reminds me of either a rye or wheat beer finish. Fair, but nothing really exciting here. I never did get much of any smoke aspect from this, I don’t know if that is good or bad??

2007 bottle....looks like a coca-cola...very little foam but a tan color...smells like the essence of a half chewed burnt hot dog, but so mild that it took me many sniffs even to get that...thin body, seems unbalanced, no smoke taste, just an ordinary substance...has a malt, cereal-like finish, not awful but not real impressive...smoke is merely a suggestion on the finish....chalky body, if that makes sense

2006...12 oz bot...Yum Yum, creamy light ale...soft carbonation & interesting...has a brown ale/ hazelnut aftertaste...really friggin good (can I say that?)....very likable
Rating reflects 2007 bottle

Lightly hazed otherwise clear brown ale with a nice moka head. Sweet malt smeel with notes of apples, and light peat. Some wet dog too. In mouth, the smokeyness comes out, like a fine scotttish malt whiskey, the ,alt is too overly sweet, and a nice little hops in finale. Lighter bodied but very good. Bought at CJs in Potsdam NY, fall 2004.

Dark amber in colour with darker brown highlights when held up to a light. Thin white head which sit atop is a nice addition to an already great looking beer. The smell is good, definately some hops and some smoke smell that is very noticable. This is my first of the style, so hopefully it wont affect this rating at all. Starts out as a medium-bodied beer which sits well in the mouth, but ends up not tasting like too much, a bit of malt and a touch of hops in a somewhat smokie flavour. Not too great, but i've got the Stone Smoked Porter coming up soon, which should be a welcome change to this one. I bought this beer in a bottle at Beers of the World in Rochester, New York.

I’ve had several year’s batches since my last rating, and I quite like this beer now - smoked? nah, this is a scottish ale,and a pretty good one, too - notes of raisins and dried cherries - notes of oak and smoke - someearthy tartness - one of the better offerings from magic hat - I don’t quite understand why magic hat beers don’t get better ratings. Their beers are distinctive and subtle, which is very true of this offering. There is a slight fruity flavor that fades into a light hop and smoke finish. However, there is something about it that makes it seem like they were trying to make their Humble Patience, but skipped a step or two. [re-rate: on second drinking, this beer is pretty bad. Their only beer that is worse is hocus pocus. I’m starting to notice the ’hit-or-miss’ quality of magic hat.]

Terrible label. Burnished amber w/chill haze; grapes, sundried tomato, chocolate in the aroma; malt accent - cocoa, earth, leaves, very light smoke.

I agree with the general concensus that this is a grow on you beer. The smokey flavor was rather overpoweringly earthy at first, much like rich moss. But your palate gets used to it. a decent beer.
