This American-style Black IPA is nearly jet black and perceived to have high hop bitterness, flavor and aroma with medium-high alcohol content, balanced with a medium body. The appearance may trick you into thinking you are about to enjoy a traditional stout beer when in fact your senses are about to be overwhelmed with our Black IPA. Juicy, fruity, floral, and pine from Pacific Northwest hops gives the beer a classic West Coast IPA hop character. The Black IPA is further characterized by a balanced and moderate degree of caramel malt and subdued dark roasted malt flavor and aroma. 7.2% ABV, 85

22 oz. bottle purchased at On the Vine for $7.99 with a best before 7/22/14 stamped on the neck. Color is dark brown nearly black when held to the sunlight. Aroma is bold pine and citrus hops. Earthy pine resin. Thin tan head that left spiderweb lace down the side.
Flavor is balanced. Burnt chocolate malts and barely with a touch of citrus. The pine resin lingers for a good duration after the sip. Nice light chocolate malts help with the balance, also has a light floral hop flavor as well. Body is a tad on the light side but it’s not a negative. Carbonation is moderate with a very dry finish. Awesome brew and I enjoyed this a lot. If you like this style this is a damn nice example, go get some, I could drink a boat load of this, flavorful and worth the money.

Bomber bought @ biere-revolution.com. Pours reddish dark brown with a frothy brownish beige head that leaves lots of spotty trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is slightly malty, fruity, tiny herbal and slightly earthy with caramel, roasted malts, grapefruit juice, dried pineapple, mango, moist soil, dark roast coffee, burnt wood, pine needles, orange zest, lemon zest and sweet liquorice candy. Taste is sweet, bitter, tiny fruity, slightly herbal and slightly earthy with roasted malts, grapefruit rinds, lemon balm, pine needles, burnt wood, dark roast coffee, roasted cereal, overripe tropical fruits, liquorice root, winegums and moist soil. Mouthfeel is round, soft, slightly astringent and medium bodied. Finish is tiny sweet, bitter and earthy with roasted malts, grapefruit rinds, rasisins, dark roast coffee, pine needles, resinous wood, orange peal, lemon balm, moist soil and liquorice root. Solid unspectakular Black IPA.

Bottled. A red beer with a brown head. The aroma has notes of hops, citrus fruits, and roasted malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt, caramel, and citrusy hops, leading to a bitter finish.

I almost forgot about this. At PH in Vegas. A roasty kind of Black IPA. Not a favourite.

Location: Draft at Hackney's Printers Row, 6/3/14
Aroma: The nose is pretty much on-style, with the hops over roast from a component standpoint
Appearance: This beer pours a dark brown with a light brown head and heavy lace
Flavor: The taste has a nice hop bitterness up-front, with a more roasted malt finish
Palate: The body is light-medium, with a smooth mouthfeel, and it has a dry/roasty finish to it
Overall Impression: I thought this was a really nice example of a Black IPA. Unfortunately, I haven't had the opportunity to try all of the Hop Odyssey beers thus far, but I have enjoyed the one's I have tried, and I would love to try to rest.

Bottle split at the Black (IPA) Friday tasting, thanks to Kenny M, 09/05/14. Light black with a moderate light tan covering that retains well. Nose is bitter roast, pine, tropicana, bitter grapefruit. Taste comprises pine bite, bitter grapefruit, light smoke, bitter hop presence. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close laced with hop bitterness. Decent Seedy Aye!
