This American-style Black IPA is nearly jet black and perceived to have high hop bitterness, flavor and aroma with medium-high alcohol content, balanced with a medium body. The appearance may trick you into thinking you are about to enjoy a traditional stout beer when in fact your senses are about to be overwhelmed with our Black IPA. Juicy, fruity, floral, and pine from Pacific Northwest hops gives the beer a classic West Coast IPA hop character. The Black IPA is further characterized by a balanced and moderate degree of caramel malt and subdued dark roasted malt flavor and aroma. 7.2% ABV, 85

Leighton 10K tasting at Bruce’s pad. Opaque dark brown beer, bubbly pale tan head. Palate is light and a little crisp. Mild dark malts, thin cream and a whisper of roast. Light piney hops, mildly bitter. A littlr orange marmalade underneath. Finishes airy and slightly bitter. Light easy drinking CDA.

Bottle shared in London - many thanks to Kenny. Pours clear brown with a frothy, tan head. Nice aroma, some burnt pine, lots of juicy citrus, orange and grapefruit. Light to medium sweet flavor with dry, burnt wood, toasted pine, nice chocolate, roast, orange rind, melon. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Lightly resinous to finish with mellow warmth, more toasted pine, wood, earth. Solid.

Bottle at Bruce’s. It pours darkest brown with a medium light tan head. The nose is fresh, piney, citrus peel, soap, potpourri, toast and roasted malt. The taste is bitter, roasted malt, varnish, piney, resin, raw bitterness, citrus peel, light alcohol, grapefruit and dirt with lingering bitter finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Plenty of raw bitterness. Not the most refined, but decent enough anyhow.

Pours pitch black with a smooth white head. Aroma of roasty malts, grassy hops, pine and resinous notes. Taste is smooth, roasty and hoppy with loads of pine and resinous notes. Finish is smooth and hoppy with some roastiness, pine, licorice and juicy fruitiness. Quite tasty black IPA.

66 cl. bottle poured in to a Tulip. Near black with dark brown hues and a medium sized, creamy tanned head. Fruity, roasted aroma with dark malts, citrus, caramel, chocolate, floral hops and grasses. A mouldy, earthy note. Taste is bitter. Medium body with a creamy texture and a soft carbonation. Finishes dry and bitter with roasted malts, citrus, liquorice, floral hops and coffee. Good. However, lacks a bit citrus hops freshness. And less earthy notes.

Draught at St. Augustine’s, Vancouver
Dark brown color, near black, with creamy head. Aroma of boutique coffee, mild and fresh. Smooth mouthfeel; roasted malt and coffee flavor, dark but not burnt, with light residual sweetness, traces of roasted nuts; strong bitterness, with hop resins hidden by rising hop character.
A good beer, somehow different from other Black IPAs, but doesn’t get me too excited.
