The Chimay Red is the oldest of the Chimays. Its coppery color and sweet, fruity taste make it a particularly tasty dark ale.
In the 75 centiliter version, which is in existance since 1978, this beer is also called La Première.

3/6/2023. Bottle shared at SBGP3. From Beers Of Europe. Pours clear dark bronze brown with a small frothy off-white head. Good looking pour. Aroma of toffee, malt, biscuit, syrup, dried fruits, molasses. Quite sweet, moderate bitterness. Medium body, creamy, average carbonation. Also 16/10/2025. At the Sky Tower Bar, Tirana. See photo. This one was quite heavily carbonated. Otherwise the same.

My least favourite Chimay. That basically finishes my 2023 Chimay horizontal. Just confirms again, the white and green and are my faves.

Servida en cáliz trapense, color cobrizo oscuro, turbia, espuma marfil cremosa y bien retenida. Aroma dulzón a malta, caramelo, fruta madura, ciruelas pasas...exquisito. Otra delicia imprescindible

Bottle at Hops, Crewe (surprised I’ve not rated this before). Pours a deep ruby with medium sized frothy off-white head. There’s malts and molasses in the aroma, plus some hints of strawberries. In the mouth there are dark fruits together with marzipan, treacle, figs and raisins plus some underlying yeastiness. Finish is dry and yeasty. Simply put, this is excellent !
