We have just released a special Abbey Blonde 5%, in association with the Benedictine Monks at Pluscarden Abbey, Morayshire.
The Belgian-inspired blonde beer is similar in style to those brewed by monastic communities in Belgium and Germany and traditionally drunk during the 40-day Lenten fasting period for sustenance and nourishment.
Brother Michael de Klerk has made several visits to the brewery and worked alongside the Black Isle team to brew the beer. It is a pale yellow in colour with distinctive notes of banana and vanilla on the nose. It’s perfect spring beer to toast the season of renewed life and rejuvenation. This is the only beer brewed with monks in Scotland.

330ml bottle. Clear, pale golden colour with average to huge, frothy to macropore, osteoporosing, minimally lacing, white head. Slightly fruity, wheaty-grainy aroma, a yeasty touch, spicy hay and hop overtones, unspecific fruitiness. Taste is strawy, grainy, pale malty, subtle sweetness, unspecific fruitiness, melon at most, a spicy yeasty touch, a floral touch as well; prickling, lively carbonation. Light and refreshing, maybe a bit too light for a true Belgian (Ale).

(bottle, 33cl, gushing) Hazy, pale golden colour with a blond and huge rocky foamy head. Mildly pale malty nose with notes of lemon, green banana, white bread and Belgian yeasty spice. Moderately sweet and slightly bitter flavour, rather light bodied with a modest carbonation. Pale malt character with fruity notes of lemon, citrus, as well as delicately zesty notes; medium-dry, sweet and delicately bitter finish. Okay, hate the gushing. 23.IX.14

Bottle atop Leightons magnificant stairwell thanks to Paulo, 02/09/14. Clear pale golden with a moderate white covering. Nose is straw, lemon sherbets, yeast esters, grain. Taste comprises citric peel, sharp lemon intake, spice, grassy vibes. Medium bodied, fine carbonation with a little spritz, semi drying close. Ok.

Bottle shared at Leightons house. Aroma is straw, spicy Nobel hop, slight stale note. Lemon citrus edge in the nose. Very pale yellow coloured pour with a light haze and a thin white froth. Flavour is light crisp, pils grains, light citrus, straw. Palate is light and refreshing with highish carbonation. Nice dry finish. Decent.

Bottle shared in London - many thanks to Paul! Pours perfectly clear pale yellow, lightly effervescent with a creamy white head. Light biscuity pale malts in the aroma with touches of lemon and straw. Light sweet flavor with bitter hay lemon meringue, dry pale malts. Light bodied with average carbonation. Dry and lightly sweet on the finish with some pale grains, dirty hay. Fairly mild but easy drinking.

Bottle shared at Leighton’s. It pours clear pale gold with a decent white head. The nose is soft, sweet apple, pear drops, straw, grain and mild spice. The taste is clean, crisp, watery, apple, pear, grain, soap and not much else with a dry finish. Light-medium body and moderate carbonation. Clean and pretty drinkable, just not much to it...

Bottle from the Red Squirrel. Appearance - pale blonde with a decent head. Nose - initially butterscotch but some orange comes through eventually. Taste - toffee and orange. Maybe some almond biscuits. Palate - medium bodied with a big tangy texture and a long dry finish. Overall - disappointing for this brewery and also for this style.

Bottle at home. Sweet, dry toffee, light fruit, light spice, bit thin, quite nice though.
