Draught @ CBC2013. Pours pitch black with a small creamy dark mocha head that slowly dissipates while leaving a small trace on the glass. Smell is malty with roasted malts, dark roast coffee, vanilla fudge, cocoa powder, pine, charred wood, salty licorice candy, roasted hazelnuts, dark grapes, burnt caramel and ash. Taste is bitter and malty with heavily roasted malts, dark roast coffee, vanilla fudge, burnt caramel, roasted hazelnuts, hay, salty licorice candy, alcohol, raisins, soil, toffee, charred wood, pine and ash. Mouthfeel is round, slightly boozy, roasted astringent and medium to full bodied. Finish is bitter and malty with roasted malts, dark roast coffee, burnt caramel, vanilla fudge, raisins, roasted nuts and hints of bourbon and cocoa powder. Good but a bit over the top…

The Sampler, Brooklyn tap: Pours black with a brownish head. Aroma is barrel, burnt malts, burnt wood, soy sauce, dark chocolate, and a bit of whiskey. Taste is pretty intense. Quite bitter and sweet. Body is thick and oily. Plenty of complexity. Lots of smoke and wood hitting pretty strong. Good, but definitely a sipper.
