Cana en el Senor Lúpulo Gijon 26..07.. 2017. (r116).

Draft at Gollem during their five years anniversary event. Medium thick, pale brownish beige, dissolving but stable on the edge with a strange star-shaped remainder of foam in the middle; black colour with burgundy hue visible for about one millimeter off the edge. Aroma of hot chocolate sauce, walnut liqueur, melting black chocolate bars, vanilla but subtly so, honey-glazed beetroot, green beans, brown rum, pistacchio nuts, hazelnut oil, shoe polish, brandy, espresso, varnish. Chestnut and candied fig sweetness in the mouth, some dim and vaguely dried berry-like sourishness, soft carbo, light umami accent, thick syrupy and viscous body. Nutty and toffeeish malts, huge and thick, quickly toasted bitterish with a deeper roasted black coffee-like bitterness in the end reinforced by actual coffee flavour as well as black bitter cocoa nibs. Vanilla is there retronasally but remains a tad understated perhaps, though well noticeable under closer scrutiny; peppery hop bitter touch and warming rum-like alcohol, well-positioned and only showing up in the tail after everything else has passed by, the way it ought to be. Lovely and rich like the other stouts from this brewery, but could do with a bit of conditioning on it and less of the varnish-like fusel effects in the nose, which would make it a bit less crude. Had this from a nitro tap at Billie’s Bierkafetaria too the same evening and with such a treatment, it was even more palpable, with a smoother, much creamier effect; this rating is an average of both.

Nitro tasting glass @ Billie’s Bier Kafétaria. This stuff is ridiculous on nitro, so bloody thick. Black with this super thick deep mocha head that doesn’t last. Nose is thick mocha, chocolate with low bitterness, low roast, bit earthy chocolate. Taste is thick pure chocolate, mocha syrup, thickest mocha imaginable, lightly earthly, coffee, much coffee, chocolate, maybe some cacao nibs, ridiculously thick, one of the thickest beers I have ever had. So thick, all about mocha & coffee. Too bad that there is no vanilla here,… There was no Vanilla or Hazelnut in that version,… Coffee is definitely here & the nitro really helps so definitely better than the base version.

Sample at the ’Smoked Meats and Beer’ tasting on 05/27/2017. Motor oil black pour with a medium thick foamy tan head that diminishes gradually to a film. Patches of lacing on the glass. The aroma consists of coffee, chocolate, roast malt and vanilla. Full-bodied with flavors of roasty coffee, malt, oaky vanilla and chocolate. The finish is sweet with a vanilla mocha aftertaste. Very good beer all around.
