Sampled 330 ml. bottle @ ZBF 2016. (Thank you for sharing RB people!) Dark brown, little tanned head. Nose is sweet leaves, low cacao powder, improving it a bit, basic candy & brown sugar. Taste is a bit empty, herbal, licorice, cloves, sugar, bit empty, tad dull, low cacao powder, saves it a bit for me. Better than expected, nothing great but some mild redeeming qualities.

Bottle. Beautiful red/brown colour, creamy beige foam, stays until the last drop. Nose of red fruit, caramel and toast. Tart notes, some infection? Strange beer.

Pours dark brown. Small head fadest instantly. Smell is sharp, grainy, even a mild sourness from which I am expecting infection on this one. Taste is very burnt, and very sharp. Is it sourness, or is it just the intense burnt aspect ( overly burnt here) together with the rather thin mouthfeel that make it very alike sourness somehow ? bit dry as well. Some funky flavors which I wouldn’t expect in a stout. Yeah, this is probably infected. But in a subtile way though. Note -the text here on RB speaks about lactic acid being in there by plan. Not sure if this is an infected beer that would be named ’slightly sour’ just to save them the pain of having complains and/or committing flaws, or a beer sour on actual purpose, in which case I think would be a bad one, since the sourness should either be intenser, or just not there. Leaves us with the unstable foam that dissapears completely within seconds, often pointing towards the infected scenario.

Kroontje’s first beer, with medium thick, lacing, off-white, moussy head and clear, beautiful, warm copper colour with calm sparkling; hazy with deposit. Aroma strikes me with FFF (freshly fermented farmland) at first, almost a smell of menure, initially covering more pleasant impressions of hazelnut, raspberry, vague coffee grounds, burnt wood, dried leaves, dates, dry earth, caramel, orange peel, hints of raisins and liquorice, but some faint DMS (cooked cabbage) as well. Some candied sweetness in the onset, candied figs, passion fruit, orange freshness with a tart, oud bruin-like quality to it, a bit sourish; medium carbo, smooth and supple, bit resinous mouthfeel, more powdery with deposit, malty middle phase of caramelly malt sweetness with a toasted edge, stretching deep into the finish, and so does the initial, somewhat drying tartness; a deep, brief but structuring hop bitterishness appears as well but the fruit sweetness lasts longer. Estery but still fairly ’clean’, rounded dubbel, with an apparently deliberate sourishness (so the brewer claims), which lends it a kind of oud bruin (Flemish red) character, but clearly lacking the finesse and depth of the true oud bruins, I must add. Interesting but not well executed, with a manure-like quality to the aroma which kept bothering me throughout.
