Draught at BeerTemple in Amsterdam during Nogne O’s tap take over for Carnivale Brettanomyces. Creamy, dense, pale greyish beige head, deep mahogany brown robe with burgundy hue. Aroma of sherry vinegar, moldy nut shells, black tea, dried tree leaves, wet cardboard, elderberry, balsamico, dry red wine. Tart onset, sour berries, medium carbo, nutty malt body, dry and a bit woody while the tartness continues and further dries the mouth, medium long finish. Atypical for the style - a bit harsh on the palate, not too well balanced and lacking a bit in both complexity and ’roundedness’ or even some sweetness to balance out the acidity. I do not have the impression Nogne O, who otherwise have done great things, has a thorough understanding of this traditional style. Not their best work, to my taste, and a missed opportunity at greatness in a style which is experiencing something of a revival these days even in its home country.

On tap at Carnivale Brettanomyces ’16. At Beer Temple. Dark brown colour, off-white head. Aroma of ’t IJ yeast, cinnamon, some balsamic vinegar. Flavour of light roast, toast, caramle, light balsamic vinegar, cinnamon, IJ yeast, spicy, tart-bitter finish. Light bodied. Nice.

On tap at ’Beertemple’ during Carnivale Brettanomyces 2016. Slightly hazy, dark red with a medium large, frothy, off-white head. Sourish, a little sweetish, and a bit fruity aroma of vinegar, red grapes, some caramel and wood. Sourish-fruity, slightly sweetish taste of caramel, red grapes, vinegar and wood, followed by a short, moderately tart, a little vinous and slightly metallic finish. Medium body, slightly astringent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Okay, expected more.

THANK YOU for sharing. Sampled draft at Beer Temple during Carnivale Brettanomyces 2016! Reddish dark brown, tanned head. Quite a conflicting beer, overly sour leading to glue & some vinegar upfront mixed with conflicting cacao & roasted malts in the back, dark fruits. Both components stand really separate & don’t mix at all. Soft carbonation, strangely & overly mess. Not the biggest fan. Nøgne Ø has done better for sure.

Tap at BeerTemple. Dark reddish brown with beige head. Quite herbal, light lactic, plastic, rotten fruits, moldy cocoa beans. Dusty bitter, light sour and sweet. Under medium bodied with a bit watery feel. Not my thing.

03/06/2016 @home - 33cl bottle from Bierhalle Deconinck, Vichte. Clear redbrown with small fading head. Nose has the accents of what an "Oud Bruin" should have. Dark fruits, cherry, sourness, some caramel. Nice and complex aroma. Unfortunately, the complexicity doesn’t appear in the taste. Some sourness, berries, caramel, a hint of dark malts, but all less outspoken as in the nose. But all in all a nice tribute with original characteristic

Bottle 330ml (Vinmonopolet). Dark ruby color, small off-white head. Tartish fruity Rodenbach-like aroma with riped fruits. Light-bodied to medium-bodied. Riped fruits, date, tartness. Short sweetish finish. Mellow but very easy.

Bottled (from Vinmonopolet Kirkenes). Amber colour, small off-white head. Aroma is wood, some tartness, fruits as well as some mild lactic notes. Flavour is sugary, some tart wooden notes as well as some syrupy and mild sweet malts to it.
