Smoked black bitter: Deep ebony, nocturnal toned strong best bitter with a mellow blend of roast, cara and black malts. Notes of coffee, tobacco and dark chocolate with an all English bitter finish from the Bramling Cross and Fuggles.

Bottle from The Royal Albert, New Cross. It pours dark brown with mini off-white head. The aroma is mellow, rich smoked malts, toast, malt loaf and fruit cake. The taste is rich, mellow roasted malts, smoke, dried fruits, fruit load, toast, earth and a touch of ash in the background. Medium body and fine carbonation. Perhaps a touch less punchy that I had hoped for, but it drinks pretty easy. Not bad.

Bottle, gift from Jim- cheers! Dark brown with a good beige head but an annoying thin prickly fizz. Lots of chocolate, plenty of maltiness too. A little smoke and a metallic hint follow through. Would class this as a strong mild rather than the bitter it’s shown as. Nice though, whatever it is.

500ml bottle from Head of Steam Railway Museum, Darlington. Clear dark brown chestnut colour, biege foam head leaving alittle lacing and aroma of malt, powdered chocolate, caramel, molasses, light roasted. Taste is sweet malty with caramel, dark fruity notes, nutty and roasted bitterness. Smoothish mouthfeel, medium bodied, soft carbonation, lingering light roast bitter finish. Nicely drinkable.
