Cask; special for the Wetherspoons Real Ale Festival October 2013.
The brew crew from Ballast Point has returned to brew another beer, especially for this Wetherspoon real-ale festival, at Marston’s Brewery, in Staffordshire. With a pale copper hue and an IPA-inspired aroma, this has hints of lemon and grapefruit, a silky malt backbone and a bright hop flavour, resulting in a complex (yet drinkable) character.
Hops used: Ahtanum, Cascade, Cluster, CTZ, Perle, Spalt

Cask at the Moon Under Water (JDW), Watford on 24 October. Poured a clear amber colour with a white head and good lacing. Aroma of floral hops, red-current and malt. Bitter hop flavours with some tart fruit and brown sugar. Finish is dry grain, pine and cereal. Nice, but not as good as the original (probably unsurprisingly).

Cask at Standing Order JDW, Edinburgh. Dark amber colour, tan foam head leaving some lacing and aroma of malt caramel, citrus hop. Taste is malt caramel, abit biscuity and roasted, with some citrusy hop bitterness. Smooth soapy mouthfeel, light to medium bodied, soft carbonation, dry roast bitter finish. Quite OK.

Crosse Keys Spoons. Cask. Pretty much a clear amber beer. Small pale cream coloured head. Smooth palate with light fine carbonation. Good malt base, not much sweetness. Bitter orange and ripe orange hops. Some noble hop like bitterness. Brief flash of sweeter orange before quite a bitter finish. Not bad.

Cask at the Alexander Bain, Wick - the most northerly JDW, 20/10/13. HAzed dark amber with a good sized light beige head, good lacing ensues. Nose is dark malt, toffee, grass, vague hop presence. Taste comprises bready malts, toffee, fruit. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, light hop bitterness in the finish. Like many of the US collabs, looks and feels good, not a lot in the middle. Served ’Spoons Cold’ didn’t help much either but it’s unlikely this detracted from my scoring. Blandometer rising to ’Amber’ !

Clear brown colour. Aroma has some light roasted malts. This is a good example of a well balanced, malty session bitter.
