Cask; special for the Wetherspoons Real Ale Festival October 2013.

The brew crew from Ballast Point has returned to brew another beer, especially for this Wetherspoon real-ale festival, at Marston’s Brewery, in Staffordshire. With a pale copper hue and an IPA-inspired aroma, this has hints of lemon and grapefruit, a silky malt backbone and a bright hop flavour, resulting in a complex (yet drinkable) character.

Hops used: Ahtanum, Cascade, Cluster, CTZ, Perle, Spalt

Cask at JDW, White Lady, Edinburgh. Pours clear amber, good white head, but surely a bit dark for an APA? Aromas are all malt, where did the hops go? Nice list of hops used, but quantities and when used in the boil would tell us more (trade secrets aside). This is a bog-standard British bitter, with a chalky bite, probably from the Burton water.

Cask @ Bankers Draft, Sheffield [181013]
Dark amber, clear, dense white head, somelacing
Aroma - hmmm Marston minerals, bit of sulphur, oh there’s a touch of lemon
Taste - Soft caramel, minearly, yeasty, touch eggy, rust, metallic, twiggy hops, where’s the US in this?
Palate - Medium body, bit oily. Finish as main flavour, bitter twiggy hop finish, lingering bitterness, now there’s a touch of citrus zest
Overall - Waste of time, not for me

Cask at Willow Walk. It pours clear deep amber with a small white head. The nose is wood, toast, earth, light floral and leather. The taste is wood, toast, earth, leather, leaf, light floral, decent bitterness and grapefruit with a dry finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Drinkable, but not whole lot of character...

Hand-pulled half-pint in the William Withering, Wellington on 18th Oct 2013. Pale amber/copper in colour, next to no head. Expected more to be honest: this had a mild malt and fruity nose with a little floral note as it warmed in the glass. The taste was fairly bland with no strong or noticeable flavours worth mentioning. There was a slight citrus feel to the taste, but it was either too subtle and delicate for my palate, or it was just weak throughout.

Cask at the Monk’s Retreat, Reading. Deep orangey-amber with a middling yellowy-cream head. Some juicy grapefruit and dry pine, a little caramel and a dash of pepper. Enough bitterness to make it crisp and refreshing. Not bad - grew on me as I drank more.

Cask at the Old Manor (JDW), Bracknell. Golden amber with a thin cream head; sweet caramel aroma with a touch of citrus; rich butterscotch body; with a dry toffee finish. Not too bad, but way off the description of what it’s supposed to taste like.
