This is the second of the “aged beers” produced by the brewery. It is a jet black beer, with strong aromas of expresso coffee with flavours of creamy malt, coffee, chocolate, herbal hops and a bittersweet finish with a hint of liquorice. It is dedicated to the memory of the breweries that once produced this style of beer in vast quantities for export to the Baltic States via the North Sea.

Bottle from Nelson Wines, Merton. Black pour with a tan head. Rich nose of dark chocolate, caramel, coffee and sweet spices. Warming, shoulder massaging flavours of coffee, dark chocolate, toffee, caramel and raisins. Smooth, dry finish. Lovely!

Bottle at MesandSim’s tasting Aug 09. Black, lasting tan head. Black choc and espresso but with booze too on aroma. Good choc, in mouth it’s a bit like choc liquers. But too hot and boozy on finish. Choc is great. Finish burn needs work. Good liquer like drink

Bottle, Carringtons, Chorlton. A deep dark brown pour, with little in the way of a head. Aroma revealed itself with a big jab to the beak pipes that had a big hit of rich dark chocolate and brandy soaked christmas cake. Lovely stuff. Silky smooth and warming, the flavour was on the sweet side and had a great balance of roasted malt and fruit that was very satisfying. A pleasure, and definitely worth a look.

BOTTLE 001 , Big thanks to Fin, and drunk at his house ... Deep black ... light smoke ... some cherry nose ... very fruity ... quite sweet and soft ... little smokey in linger ... could do with being a little richer but very nice.

Bottle numbered No:1 kindly passed on to me by Nigel at Hopshackle. Tasted at Fin and Craigs pre Cropredy Festival mini tasting at Merton, Oxon 12-08-09 Pours dark brown,it peels away to lighter brown at the edges not much of a head noted. Aroma is subtle but pleasant with roasty malts and dark mollasses the most dominant. Tastes is roasty and malty but also has a nice fruitiness, some warmh from the alcohol, its smooth, there is even some citrus noted possibly tangerine amongst that fruity edge, little bit of bitterness, touch of liqourice its very nice stuff and more than held is own in some very highly regarded company.
