Samuel Adams Hallertau Imperial Pilsner is a celebration of the extraordinary Hallertau Mittelfrueh hop variety. This rare Noble Bavarian hop, considered to be one of the best in the world, is prized for its quality and aromatic characteristics.

The beer, which is a deep golden color with a rich, creamy head, gives off an intense and complex Noble hop aroma unlike any other brew. With the first sip, beer enthusiasts will experience an explosion of hop flavor. The intensity of deep citrus, spicy Noble hop flavor is balanced with the slight sweetness from the malt. Due to the quality of the hops, this beer remains balanced and smoothly drinkable from beginning to end. The lingering \hop signature\" is an amazing treat for hops lovers."

pours a hazy orange, with a thick sticky white head. aroma of ripe hops, touches of pine, floral hops. citrus, and a hint of mint? The flavor is extremely well balanced, lovely hops with a subtle sweetness from the malt. the 9% is nowhere to be found. Just a joy to drink.

From Sep 2007

This pours from 12oz bottlebest before January 2008) a cloudy orange with a small but firm head of foam and it has some lacing.

The smell is of citrus hops, grapefruit, and I'm also getting a bit of pine.

The taste is very hoppy! I'm getting the citrus, grapefruit & orange, but I also can taste some floral and some spicy flavours. In the background, I can just taste some caramel malt but it's on the light side...man, the finish is *very* bitter but *very* tasty. The mouthfeel is medium, the carbo is medium light, and boy, for it being 8.8%abv, it's hidden pretty well.

Also, the aftertaste lingers on like forever. A good feature if you like what's going on in this brew, a bad feature if it's not one that you favour all that much.

Bottom line: A fine tasting Imperial Pilsner; If I were to make any suggestions about it, I'd say I'd like to see a bit more of a malt profile to give it more balance. Still, it's a winner.

Quite the looker, pouring a hazy orange with a lasting thick head. Aroma is bland, though, malty and nondescript. The taste explodes with thick toffee and caramel malt sweetness, only to have this sugary front swept aside by a thick, floral, resinous swipe of Hallertau hops. The finish lasts for days, but is tempered by the honeybun-like malts that stick around for the finale. Solid, smooth, perky texture, I’d drink this again if it ever shows up in SC. (4/24/09)

i think they road tested this one before coming out with their noble pils to see if they could replace their white ale for the spring seasonal. draft selection, clear yellow with no head or lacing, sterile abv flavor with some hoppy floral characteristics. macro carbonation but with some spiciness that makes it a little more enjoyable than i thought, but overall, another so-so effort from sam adams.

Review from notes, sampled 12/14/2007 Sampled this at the German Beer Festival and later out of a bottle. Pours a cloudy golden orangey color with a fluffy white head that just wouldn’t quit. Carbonation on this one is a bit on the high side. Smell is overwhelming hops, but not the spicy or citrusy smell that one would expect from an ipa with "c" hops in it. Definitely a much more flower like smell. The taste didn’t really do it for me. Very bitter as one would expect, but not a flavorful bitter. Maybe my pallet isn’t ready for this beer, but I would have liked some grapefruit, or citrus flavors in with the bitter, but it just wasn’t there. Medium body with bitterness all around. I saved a couple of bottles of this and I think it will be really interesting to see how these hold up over time. As they are now, I think they are a bit harsh.

Golden hazy beer. Smooth palate. Lots of intense hop fruit and all round hoppy goodness. Delicious and hugely drinkable.

Drank the Hallertau Imperial Pilsner bottle. Nice amber pour with whitish head. Resin, floral hoppy nose with a taste you’d expect from the genre. Good beer. Rated 7/4/09.

Sam Adams succeeds with this big hoppy pilsner that shows off their ability to compete with smaller, specialty brewers. This pilsner packs a ton of great hop flavor, although I’m fairly sure that my tongues is not refined enough to identify it as a pilsner without knowing beforehand. It’s close to a heavily hopped IPA or DIPA for me. The hops have a flavor that is unlike anything that I’ve tried thus far. The beer is a bit dark for a pilsner and has a stronger head than most.
