Once brewed in Britain for the Russian Czars, this tremendously rich and thick ale uses a profusion of burnt and caramel malts. A massive mouthful of dark roasted malt and coffee flavors finishes with hints of chocolate, caramel & licorice. (aka Russian Imperial Stout).

Dark brown and relatively flat-looking. Nutty, slightly chocolatey nose. Fudgey, nutty taste is slightly syrupy. Really thin. Please just call it some other kind of stout and it will be viewed more favourably.

Pours black with a nutty head. Aroma is very sweet and sugary (licorice), lightly roasted with a good touch of coffee. ABV at 7.9% is slightly low for a Russian Imperial Stout. A good beer none the less.

Wax-capped bomber, 2006 issue, drunk on 11/8/07, at about 20 months of age or so.
Well if there’s ever a case been made for wax impeding oxidation this is it. Granted 20 months isn’t that great an age for an imperial stout, but A) this is a lower gravity version and B) it comes off as if it is brand-spanking-new!! Not tired, loose, flat in texture/mouthfeel, no soy or old, stale coffee notes in aroma or flavor. The beer even pours with a massive, well-retained head. The only thing old in this stuff is the ivory color of the head. Lacing is minimal, body is black and probably not opaque, with no sediment on the bottom.
What it has gained in absolute graceful aging, it somewhat loses in its sweetness, which is right away notably overdone. It’s not painful, and the beer never really cloys, but it could definitely benefit from convertin some of those fat toffee/molasses sugars in to some vinous, dry/tart fruits. Some coffee notes on the finish hold it together, while a reasonably roasty suggestion of burnt malts helps waylay some of the sweetness. Not to say there is no fruitiness/vinousness, as there are some light raisin/currant hints, but they are eventually re-swallowed up by the sweet malt sugars. Medium carbonation, with a very lush texture on account of all the sugars. For all that, it’s not thick or sluggish, and actually, the lower gravity gives it a more down-to-earth, unimperial feel, in that regard. Good stuff, as much as I’ve resented the past couple of Sprecher beers I’ve had, this one was shockingly nice.

Bottle. (thx for sharing, Papsoe) Black body with a small, tan head. Burnt, dryish nose, quite heavy, with mocha and some alcoholl. Dry flavor, quite burnt, with some licorice, mocha and a little alcohol. Full, dry body. Mocha, dried fruits, roasted malt and licorice in the finish. Dangerously quaffable for an imperial stout. (Bottle 47 cl) Courtesy of Degarth. Pours black and opaque with a handsome, creamy, light brown head. Intens and somewhat vinous aroma with hard roasted malts. Quite full-bodied, notes of hard roasted but also sweet malts and a hint of prunes. Again very delicate vinous notes, some sweet licorice and a lightly burned edge with some malt astringency. Not a huge Imperial Stout, but quite nice and pleasant. 041007

16 fl oz bottle. Pours dark brown, almost black with a lacing light brown head. Dried fruit and chocolate aroma. Chocolate and a bit of liqourice make it into the flavour. Ends bitter and chocolate smooth. Lacks some complexity to be really exiting.

16 oz Bottle; nose of chocolate, raisins, and coffee; opaque black, brown edges, with a big rusty brown, that earns it a five; prettiest beer I’ve had in a while; flavor of chocolate, fig newtons, and a lot of raostiness, and fruitiness; finish is like figs covered with chocolate and a hint of bitterness in the back end. I liked it! Underrated!

Purchased in a variety pack at Beverage Castle in Tampa. Dark black pour with deep light brown head. The aroma is burnt malts followed quickly by fruity sweet Concord jelly, dates, fudge brownies and coffee. The taste begins like the aroma with mild roasted to burnt malts that quickly turn sweeter with the aid of dark fruitiness and hints of molasses. Toward the finish the burnt malts are joined by coffee, sweet caramel candy and dark chocolate. Very nice.

Bottled. A pitch black beer with a thin brown head. The aroma is slightly oxidized combined with notes of over ripe fruits and bread. The flavor is sweet with notes of chocolate, malt, and bread, but also with a slight touch of oxidation combined with a light hop bite.
