Humulus Terreux is the type of beer that gets our stomachs tied up in knots of excitement. It’s a chance for us to experiment with both hops and yeast, creating unique, juicy & funky flavors with just these seemingly simple, earthen ingredients. Each batch of Humulus Terreux will use a different hop varietal and one of the several strains of Brettanomyces yeasts that we have incubating in our laboratory to create a one of a kind, wildly traditional bière™. The flavor possibilities are endless when combining possible hop notes of citrus, pine, flowers or grass with the barnyard funk, earth and tropics that can come from a 100% Brettanomyces fermentation. While each beer will showcase a different, distinct character, the overall result will always be dry, funky and delightfully hoppy.

75cl bottle from Rudat. Funky beginning with lots of carbonation. The hops are nice earthy bitter, the beer is funky with a nice yeasty dry background. Refreshing with a nice and bitter earthy body. Light with grainy hints, sessionable and great round funky.

750 ml bottle. Pours a hazy yellow/amber with huge head. Aromas of overripe stoned fruit, candied lemon, Brett, and toasted malts. Flavors of cottony Brett (a lot), lemongrass, and wheaty malts. Suspect this one was more fruity when younger. Overpriced fro delivery, but if you like Brett...

Courtesy of Josh, this is the Motueka version
Cloudy blond color. Funky aroma. Dry mouthfeel, very astringent, quite earthy, and astringent bitterness in the final. Mediocre.

750mL bottle, a cloudy golden with a medium white head. Aroma brings out light brett, citrus and light tropical fruitiness. Flavour is on the bitter side, with tropical fruity hops, citrus, pine, floral notes, and brett. On the bitter side, but it works well enough. Funky and bitter on the finish. Good stuff.

Motueka version. Hazy, tan, and a medium head. On the nose, this has a mellow herbal note almost like anise, with a bit of rambutan as well. Not grabbing much brett, but it’s a nice saison character. Same palate, with peppery, dusty taste, sweet pale malts, and a balanced hop character. Fair bit of brett. Brightish fruity hop notes...so pretty good. I think the brightness of motueka actually works well in the context of what is otherwise a nice basic saison.

Bottle, shared at my 10K rating celebration. Funk and hop nose, citrus, grapefruit, lots of funk, white pepper. Funk-ass and stinky flavor, manure, grapefruit, creamy deuce. Quite bitter as well. Interesting and super funky but a bit too shitty.

Bottle shared at KL’s place. Humulus Terreux Motueka A very cloudy pale straw gold. White pepper, wheat and that sweet tart candyish aroma with a bit of a manure barnyard weirdness. The taste is very bitter brett and wheat with some lemon rind. Many loved it but I felt it wasn’t my cup of tea.
