Bottle, from the BXL pack. Mostly clear, deep ruby red. Fine halo of dirty beige head. Nose has unwashed coffee beans. Mouldy wood. Wine dregs. Some dark chocolate. Some nutty, earthy malts. Taste is tart and vinegary, and a little dry. Pretty thin mouthfeel, given the hefty ABV. Fine, crisp carbonation. Tart and a little acidic on the finish.

Bottle from BXL Box. Deep ruby brown with beige head. Roasted coffee and vinegar in an absolutely horrible combination. Chocolate with cherries. A bit of fart. Weird and bad.

Level 6 bottleshare. Thanks to New Ken and a fond farewell! Opaque dark brown beer, small pale tan head. Smooth palate, semi dry and with decent fine carbonation. Tangy sour dark malts and tangy dark fruits and tangy dark chocolate. Lemony sourness sits awkwardly alongside the coffee. Doing nothing for me.

Hof ten Dormaal’s contribution to the specialty pack issued by this year’s BXL Beerfest. From a 75 cl bottle with crown cap, shared with Goedele. Mousy, pale yellowish beige, coarse and quickly opening, medium thick head leaving behind dotty ‘islands’ in the middle; black robe with thin hazy ochre edges. Aroma of soaking wet ‘fondant’ chocolate bars, coffee grounds (strong), sour yoghurt, brambleberries, damp forest floor, tree leaves, old meldar, cola, soggy rye bread, old sweat, wet wood. Sweetish onset, candied fig- and old raisin-like aspects with a dash of pear, soon countered by rapidly developing, unripe plum- and blackberry-like sourness, lively, fruity and crisp but clearly lactic in nature, drying and effectuating a yoghurty effect on a soft, sweetish, caramelly and dark-chocolatey malt body; the sourness stretches over the palate but remains well in balance with the sweetness of the malts and the fruity estery aspects, giving an impression of ‘oud bruin’, like most sour stouts do. Ends with pronounced retronasal coffee, a leafy hop bitterness, lactic sourness and yeasty earthiness, all highlighted by a calvados- or plum brandy-like alcohol glow. Earthy and leafy, but less so than expected, this interesting beer turned out a lot better than I was expecting (based on my experiences with this brewery); quite ‘vivid’ and well-balanced, remaining easily drinkable as a result. Could possibly become even greater with some extended ageing on it.

Bottle. Darkest brown color with beige head. Aroma is coffee ground, bell peppers, some funk. Taste is coffee ground, some funky fruitiness, nice balance. Oily mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Good!
