Smoked Red Ale. Amber ale, earthy and malty, with a tannic tea flavor and a subtle smokiness. Brewed with smoked malts and pimped with a hint of Tarry Suchong, a chinese smoked tea, this amber ale is surprisingly subtle and food friendly smoked.

I have no idea what this is. It was an extra..that’s for sure. Nice looking bottle, impossibly hard to find this in RateBeer. Enjoyed at 60F in a tulip.
A - Total freaking gusher! I should have saw this crap coming. What a disappointment when you get 12 ounces of beer and it gushes like...that trip from Switzerland was brutal aka..your’e not worthy to try this beer. HUGE 4 finger tan head. Gorgeous lacing, raising purple / brown appearance. Nice clarity.
S - I can smell ripened cherries and plums from a few feet away. On the nose, I don’t get any smokiness at all. There’s this really nice belgian strong ale..sort of La chouffe / Duvel nose on it. I get Ommegang yeast as well. This Belgian weird tart farmhouse character.
T - First off, tart cherries and figs. Followed by an intense liquid smoke, malty oaky sort of chewiness. I hate smoked beers but it’s still mild compared to some smoked beers I’ve had. finish is tart and sour again which is nice.
M - Medium body, high carbonation.
O - This isn’t a bad beer. It’s quite nice..minus the smoke.

Bottle - A bit sour fruit and alcohol on the nose. You can get some malts but the acid overwhelms. Cloudy dark orange with a thin head that doesn’t dissipate. Acid and alcohol prevail with the smoke of tea creeping in. Very interesting and complex, not a daily drinker but worth trying.

75cl, anno 2011, courtesy of Rémi.

Pours cloudy amber into a snifter. Off-white head quickly recedes to hug rim. Sweet tea and vanilla aromas. Thin with sweet and sour summer fruit with a bitter pith finish.

Bottled shared by maniac at the 14th Richmond Ratebeer Gathering, 3/19/11. Pours a clear amber color with a thin creamy tan head. Fair head retention and lacing. Spicy aroma with notes of caramel, leafy hops, nutty notes and tea. The taste is tart fruity notes, tea, a faint bit of smoke, some nutty notes and bitter hops. Spicy finish. Medium bodied.

10/10/11/9/10/10

33 cl swing top bottle purchased at The Wine and Cheese Place in St Louis, Missouri. C and 9 notched on the label. Pour is a hazed browish golden with a small tan head. Aroma is light smoke, soft leafiness and a mildly sweet apple fruit nose. There is an element which has a bit of intentional oxidation to it. Taste is the smoke / Suchong tea taste right off, followed close behind with some herbal malt sweetness, transitiong back to the smokiness and finishing with the leafy earthiness. The herbal / meeicinal sweetness re-appears in the longish finish. Flavors are decently integrated, quite a bit going on in this one. Palate is medium to thin bodied, a bit of a slick mouthfeel, higher level of carbonation, and the medicinal herbal sweet aftertaste. Interesting, a fun experiment.
