Smoked Red Ale. Amber ale, earthy and malty, with a tannic tea flavor and a subtle smokiness. Brewed with smoked malts and pimped with a hint of Tarry Suchong, a chinese smoked tea, this amber ale is surprisingly subtle and food friendly smoked.

Bottle 750ml. @ home.Clear medium to dark amber orange color with a large, initial frothy - creamy later open, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, orange, light to moderate yeasty, light smoke, plastic - rubber notes. Flavor is light heavy sweet and moderate to heavy bitter with a long to average duration, funky yeasty and fruity, light smoked - rubbery but in the nice way. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20100528]

330mL flip top in a Melbourn Bros long-stemmed glass. Pours is a dark copper-amber color. The head is small but long lasting with a decent lacing. To call this a smoked is a bit of a misnomer. I am definitely able to pick up the Tarry Suchong in the beer as it warms, but that makes it far from a smoked beer. S/H/V would be a better category for me. The character is very much like the tea as opposed to just the smoke (but the tea is obviously smoked). Otherwise, the malt is a bit sweeter with an apricot character. Easy drinking and as advertised. A medium body with a slightly subdued carbonation. Low on bitterness and a bit drying at the end.

Deep amber coloured body with a relatively thin look and a thinnish tan head. Aroma of smoked tea, peat, light malt, alcohol and a touch of burnt sugars - not much though. Lightish-bodied; Sharp smoked flavour at first that turns mild with some yeastie and dry finishes near the end. Aftertaste shows more smoked peat (not tea), some sugars, dry oak and perhaps a touch of black tea. Overall, not so pleasing - thin and mild with no standout flavours dominate in a bad way, more so than compensate for strong flavours - if that makes sense. I sampled this 33 cL swing-top bottle, purchased not from Drinks of the World in any Swiss town, but from local Chevy Chase Wine & Spirits in Washington, DC on 13-May-2010, sampled 3 days later on 16-May-2010 from home in Washington.

Sampled as La Sainte Barbe Virtually no head on paler foxy-amber beer. End of bottle unsightly soup. Lightly sourish nose, cola and oranges. Some lactic acid, I hazard. Sourish again, lactic with backthroat spicy... ?tea? and very lightly smoked. Retronasal, after some time, faint bitterness. Very citrussy, lactic... Light bodied, refreshing, spritzy. Often drinking Lapsan Souchong, I really can’t find it in here. As to infection... Vielen dank, Sebastian!

Swing top bottle from TheCheeseMan, thanks! Amber color. Malt, licorice and a hint of pepper in the aroma. Malty, smoky tarry lapsang souchong tea flavor. Pepper, citrus and some tartness. Tarry hopbitter finish. Excellent, well balanced and tasty brew.

Bottle, 6%. Mild citric aroma, refreshing, perhaps a bit of Brett. Cloudy dark amber colour. Big stable off-white head. The flavour is slightly roasted, there are some citric notes. Not as much Bretty as lactic, but rather mildly so.
