Dry-Hopped Porter

Flora Obscura, literally dark flower, features massive dry-hopping, with Simcoe, Cascade, Amarillo, Mosaic and Galaxy hops over a robust porter base composed of two-row pale malt, two varieties of caramel malt, raw wheat and chocolate malt. Originally born as a test beer for our Tours & Rec Center, Flora Obscura explores the interplay of hops suggestive of orange, grapefruit and tropical fruit flavors with rich chocolate and espresso notes provided by roasted malts.

Tap at Pizza Paradiso Georgetown, pours a very dark amber with some spitty off white head. Nose has malt, some dark fruits, a little red grape. Flavor follows, malt and grains, grist, earthy, some raisin, a little acid too. Finishes medium bodied. Bad tap line? Not sure, but this wasn't the malt bomb others made it into.

From tap. Pours dark brown, small tan head. Aroma is fruity, slight floral. Mild herbal, straw and grassy, toasted malt. Bitter and slight herbal. Medium dry, slight herbal finish.

12 oz bottle. Pours a bark brown with full head. Aromas of dank grassy hops, dark sugar and slick roasted malts. Flavors of pine, licorice, dank resin and watery malts.

12oz bottle. BB July 11, 2018. Poured into Blvd tulip glass.Medium head atop a dark brown color. Looks pretty. But that's about it. What a dull and useless beer. Almost nonexistent roast and an encompassing generic green-ish hop aroma and flavor. They could have called this a black IPA, no difference. They actually made a black IPA back in the day that was much better. Just dull.

Strong charred oak nose with licorice and pine accents. Cola black, medium tan head, abundant glass adherence. Charred oak and pine. Creosote finish. Medium body, easy carbonation. Fabulous balance, sharp enough hop bite to be considered an IDA, but roastiness of a baltic porter. Very cool.

Pour is a pretty near black with a large tan head. Aroma is some chocolate with a red berry hop. Flavor is is more roasted malt than i thought it would have, there is also a sweet fruit hop and this is very light in body. This was a decent porter with a nice hop with equal parts charred malt.

12oz bottle. Wow. This is one of my favorite beers of the year so far. Really great balance. Big specialty malts, classical American Porter. Awesome hop balance, really has a lot of depth. Complements the sticky caramel malts perfectly. Really awesome stuff.

Curious stylistic mash-up that falls a bit short of being enjoyable. Grapefruit and pine are readily apparent, but the astringent bitterness on the back end clashes with the mellow chocolate porter notes. Like a black IPA without much of a backbone, or an American brown ale that got a little too brown. Mostly a mess, though, a hodgepodge of flavor profiles that create a bleach-tinged metallic off taste on the finish. Really not a fan.

Draft at Craft Brewed. Pours a deep brown to light black with a finger of beige head that dissipates quickly. Light coffee aromas, toasted malt and juniper berry. Some light cured ham. Hoppy on the palate, lemon zest, juniper, coffee and malt. Quite nice.
