Like a Russian Matryoshka or ’nesting’ doll, the secret of Dosvidanya® Russian Imperial Stout lies locked deep within her mysterious & elaborate wooden layers. The hidden soul of this oak bourbon barrel-aged beer that we said Dosvidanya (’goodbye’) to several months before revealing, is its rich flavors like dark chocolate, toffee, black cherries and coffee along with robust & roasty maltiness that finishes dry.

Bottle. A- Milk chocolate, soy sauce, hazelnut, dark cherry, roasty. A- Black color, black liquid, light brown head. T- Soy sauce, chocolate, earthy, roasty, leather, char, dark fruit. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, complex finish. O- When the temp hits -27 outside you reach for the Russian Imperial Stouts. Only in Siberia can they make beer to withstand these temps, and maybe Illinois too. Very complex. Reminds me a lot of Bourbon County Stout.

Bottle from an IP trade. Thank you Tanner for the opportunity at this one! 2016 vintage marked on label as 12.% ABV. Pours black with a lasting beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, light notes of dark chocolate, bourbon and oak and light vanilla.
Flavor integrates the bourbon barrel treatment very well without overpowering the base stout. Smooth texture with a full body. Ends on some charred malt and a slightly oily texture. Good viscosity. Warming finish is not overwhelming. Very nice. Maybe a tad underrated by some folks.

Draft at iTap in CWE. 14%. Black beer, tan head. Drinking 3 big stouts next to each other for comparison. It’s not big tasting, light bodied, not alcoholic tasting at all, plastic-y. Just light, empty and uninteresting. A shell compared to Avery Tweak.

4200th review! 500 ml bottle into snifter, bottled on 11/11/2015. Pours pitch black color with a 1 finger dense dark brown head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of huge dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, marshmallow, cherry, raisin, plum, fig, light smoke/char, and roast/oak earthiness. Incredible aromas with fantastic complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt, bourbon barrel, and light-moderate fruity yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of huge dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, marshmallow, cherry, raisin, plum, fig, light smoke/char, and roast/oak earthiness. Moderate bourbon/oak spiciness and roast/char bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, marshmallow, dark fruits, light smoke/char, and roast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roasted malt, bourbon barrel, and light-moderate fruity yeast flavors; with a great roasted bitter/sweet and oak spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from roast bitterness and oak spiciness. Light-medium carbonation and full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy/silky, and fairly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warmth lingering after the finish, with no booziness. Overall this is an incredible barrel aged Russian imperal stout! All around fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roasted malt, bourbon barrel, and light-moderate fruity yeast flavors; and very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the huge ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bouteille 50cl, partagée avec Tomaz, via trade, thanks to Ibrew2or3 - Cheers Dave. Batch 2014.

Sample at GABF 09/26/2015, thanks to my sis for assistance with note-taking. Jet black pour with a medium thick tan head that diminishes gradually. Patchy lacing. Aroma of bourbon, malt, and chocolate. Full-bodied with flavors of bourbon, roast malt and dark chocolate. Some earthy hops too. The finish is roasty malt and bourbon. Good beer all around.

Bottle. Chocolate fudge, hay, and bourbon aroma. Black with small tan head. Sweet chocolate malt, herbal hay, and strong bourbon flavor. Slight alcohol harshness in the finish but really not as much as expected. Very tasty.
