Brewed with well water (the original well at the Old Brewery, sunk in 1758, is still in use, with the hard well water being drawn from 85 feet underground); fermented in ‘stone Yorkshire squares’ to create an almost opaque, wonderfully silky and smooth textured ale with a complex medium dry palate and bittersweet finish.

BOTTLE 55CL.

Look: almost black with red highlights, beige creamy head.
Aroma: light roast, toast, soapy and fresh cut zucchini.
Taste: light roast balanced by that soap bubble/fresh zucchini-spiced sweetness, light hop bitterness, light acidity.

Reviewed from notes.
The appearance was an exceptionally dark brown colored body that yields a foamy brown three finger head that lasted for most of the beer. A beautiful spider web lacing clung to the sides of the glass. The body was too dark for any carbonation to be seen rising.
The smell had some chocolate up front and very strong. Once it warmed a bit some caramels and nuts came out.
The taste brought back the chocolate but it seemed it was more combined with the other flavors of caramel, nuts and some light toffee as well.
On the palate, it sat at/about a heavy with a dry finish and left nothing harsh on my tongue. This is not a sessionable beer despite the low ABV.
Overall, I thought this was a very good beer and am glad it was as heavy as it was. This would make an exceptional dessert beer and also go well in my wife’s special chocolate cupcakes that she makes with stouts.

Flasche. - Schwarzbraun, hellbrauner Schaum.

Bottle into a pint glass. Appearance is almost jet black, quite a lot of head initially- about three fingers- beige/mocha tight bubbles. Aroma- lots of roasted malt, sweet breadiness, sugar, oats. Taste- milky, creamy, rich, smooth, burnt toast, big roastiness, hints of coffee, bitterness. More sweetness as it warms. Excellently balanced and very tasty indeed.

Poured from 355mL bottle. Dark brown/black with tan head. Mild coffee, chocolate aroma with oatmeal, vanilla, and sweet malt. Taste much the same, sweet finish followed by second roasted finish. Medium body. Silky into dry finish.

Sortbrun, lille lysebrunt skum. Ristet aroma, kaffe, måske lidt vanille, senere hen sirup. Alkohol i smagen, mørke bær, en smule vinøs, men også skarp mod slutningen, brændt kaffe eller peber. Bitterhed i eftersmag.

Bottle. A- Coffee, cocoa, vanilla, oatmeal, roasty. A- Black color, dark liquid, tan head. T- Coffee, chocolate, oatmeal, nutty, toffee, slightly malty, subtle bitterness. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, smooth finish. O- One of the top Oatmeal Stouts out there. Samuel Smith manages to make a very complex yet easy to drink stout that has great flavor and great aromas. Very well done.

Bottle @ Setka Pub, Poznań. Pours cloudy very dark brown with small tan head. Clear aroma of malt, caramel, and fruit, as well as booze in the long nose. Dark flavour of fruit, malt, hops, and caramel. Lingering, bitter aftertaste, with winey notes. OK, really nice, but a trifle too fruity.
