Bottle from a trade with cbkschubert. 2007 vintage. Pours viscous dark brown/black color with brown head. Aromas of bourbon, roasted malts, chocolate, licorice, and wood. Bourbon and chocolate flavors with roasted malts and hints of licorice. Sweet molasses and vanilla with some sherry. The bourbon flavor is much more mellow than the aroma. Full body with minimal carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel. Excellent. Thanks Craig.

650 ml bottle from 16th St. 2011 reserve. Pours black with tan/orange head, which sticks around for a bit. Aromas of rich chocolate, roasted malts and dark fruit. Creamy like a swig of hot chocolate. Bittersweet chocolate and espresso flavor. Nice roasted malts. Warm but well balanced.

Pitch black with a thick and lasting brown head. Intense coffee and dark chocolate aroma with a bit of licorice, some charcoal and alcohol. Very sweet dark flavour with licorice and roast malt/coffee/charcoal trying to play nice together. Not much hop character, but you sense a good bitterness. A bit of heat reveals the alcohol.

Bottle at Chriso’s Easter tasting 2012, thanks to deeblo. It pours jet black, with a thick tan head. The nose is cherry, blackcurrant, plum, roasted malt, sesame seed, soya sauce, coffee and liquorice. The taste is roasted malt, salted liquorice, caramel, charcoal, toast, coffee, tangy dark fruit, toasted sesame seed, soya sauce, chocolate and wood, with a dry, warming finish. Full body and moderate carbonation. Good balance. A well crafted imperial stout.

Bottle from GBBF 2011 and drunk in March shared with AndrewC. Hugely chocolatey on the aroma. Normally I’m not a huge liquorice but I don’t get a lot on this. Espresso coffee. It’s pretty decent if a little papery, newspapery on the really dry roasted malt. Some heat on the end, some alcohol. Some dark berry fruit on the finish. Not much hop, some sting. Some bourbon does come through eventually. Touch of vanilla too. Mostly coffee and choc though. Yes this papery vanilla flavour on some mouthfulls isn’t great. Quite oily.
