Well stored bottle (backlog May 2017) Dark amber/brown body, close to black with a small, short lived brown head. Lovely aroma of dark roasted malt, dry fruit, oak and warming alcohol. Flavor goes int the same direction, sure its a bit boozy but actually way less booze than expected from a 20% ABV, it’s more warming and refined in alcohol with a touch of whisky, very sweet but also in some kind of balance. Body feels perfect and aftertaste seems to last forever. World class big beer.

Oh no. By far the worst in The Dark Horizion league so far Dark pour with almost no head Good intensity in the aroma. But it was more or less unpleasant Strong alcohol, vinous and dark malt Oily texture and a soft carbonation level Boozy and sticky Felt like a mix between a cheap red wine and a stout Vinous, dried fruits, dark malt, some roast and some chocolate in the flavor In a bad mix [Bottle from Vinmonopolet Aker Brygge in Oslo, Norway]

Bottle. It pours a black body under a small, diminishing tan head. Rather intense aroma with alcohol sure present, but not overpowering. Whisky, soy sauce, heavy coffee, roasted malts, a touch of bonfire, some licorice and brown sugar. It's warming and quite boozy on the palate, full-bodied, with a soft carbonation. Whisky and salty licorice do most of the flavor work, but there's also a good dash of coffee and brown sugar, roasted malts, some prunes and a hint of soy sauce. Cough syrup springs to mind towards the finish. A wonderful beer in many ways, but it's really, really strong, so a little warming up with some other strong and powerful beers at a more normal ABV is recommended to prevent DH 4.5 to feel too boozy. 190913

At tasting. Bottle, thick black pour. Aroma has booze, chocolate, caramel, figs, raisin and red grape. Taste has ripe fruit, caramel, chocolate, licorice, fudge, vanilla, red fruit, figs, booze and a really long flavorful finish. The barrel really adds an extra depth to the already rich beer, very good.

330ml bottle in a black box, batch 858, shared at a New Year’s gathering with Finn, Helge and Egil-Børge. The oily pour reveals a deep black body under a shiny black surface. Scattered lacing. Smell of vanilla oak and dried fruits. Rich, mouth filling taste of confectionery chocolate, figs, prunes and oak backed by subdued whisky with a light touch of peat. Lingering, smooth and warming finish. An enchanting drink, indeed (At Finn’s place in Tromsø 05.01.2017).
