One of Michael Jackson’s 500 Classic Brews. Carnegie Porter was brewed for the first time in 1836 and tastes the same today as it did then. Carnegie Porter has a creamy head with a scent of coffee. Its sweet and well rounded flavor is balanced by the bitterness of the hops. Storage helps the flavor mature and enhances its harmony.

2010 bottle shared with Thompson. Very dark brown color with a deep dark red glare coming through. Small beige head. Smell slightly roasty, dark malts, light sweetness, slightly coffee, slightly chocolate, slightly alcohol, caramel and wood. Taste roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, hints of -in Dutch- ’drop’. Very nice balance. A bit thin texture. Medium body, average carbonation.

Bottle shared with Alice and Sander, NYC. Pours black-brown with a foamy, beige head. Some burnt dark sugar in the nose, a bit of smokey malts. Medium sweet flavor, some firewood, dark sugars, mild chocolate, some odd grass/plastic. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Modest roast and burnt grass and plastic and licorice. Kind of weird. Not altogether bad, but certainly different.

330 ml bottle bought @ Systembolaget and consumed on January 16. Pours very dark reddish brown with a fizzy off-white head that leaves some lacing on the glass while dissipating. Smell is malty and slightly sour with dark bread, dried fruits and roasted malts. Taste is very malty, rather bitter and quite metallic with roasted malts, chocolate, bread and coffee. Finish is subtle and malty sweet with some cocoa.

11.2 fl oz bottle purchased at MDL in Overland Park, Kansas as a single. Argang 2010. The pour is black brown ruby with a one inch light tan head. Aroma is light roast malt, light honey sweet, some leaf tobacco and a dry earthiness. The sweetness of the honey pokes out a bit oddly. Taste is the leaf tobacco up front, turns to light fruit caramel cherry fruit, than the roast malt. Nice integration of flavors. Finishes with a bit of char. Palate is medium, soft creamy carbonation, and a dry mineral flinty char finish. Nice.

Bottle as Porter Klass III. Black, thick brown head with fair retention and slid lacing. Aroma of concentrated milk chocolate. Taste is smooth Hershey’s syrup. Taste is strong coffee with a tad of cocoa. Impressive for a 5% beer..

0.33l bottle from Systembolaget Passagen, Stockholm. This one pours a dark brown/dark dark red body with a nice lasting bubbly tan head. The aroma is sweetish with caramel, light roasted malts, dark ripe fruits and some chocolate milk-hints. Average carbonated with a light oily mouthfeel. More ripe fruits in the flavor with a light roasted twist. Thin both chocolate and coffee as well as a nice sweet caramel touch towards the finish. Yeah, this is one solid beer and quite a nice porter.

Bottle from 2010 sampled 9/30/2011 Pours the darkest of brown with faint ruby highlights when held to light. A good sized creamy off white head dissipates rather quickly, but leaves moderate lace in its wake. Smells of caramelized sugar and dark pitted fruit mostly but has hints of coffee and chocolate on the outer fringes. This one smells like a fine dopplebock honestly. Taste is moderately fruity with hints of chocolate and ash. Deep burnt sugars mix with dark fruit and a little bit of coffee. Medium body with a light level of carbonation and a creamy smooth mouthfeel. This is a very tasty beer. It really straddles the line between porter and dopplebock for me though. Maybe one day I can try a fresher example.
