After two months of mashing, lautering, fermenting and filtering, the wait is over: Camden VERSUS Cloudwater is finally here! Our take on a Märzen (an amber lager) is ready to go this week, and we’re pretty excited about it here at the brewery. Brewed with our friends from Cloudwater Brew Co. back in March, it’s finally time to launch it to the rest of the world (at least in London, Brighton and around Manchester, that is).

You would think having six different malts (Pilsner, Munich, Vienna, Carared, Caraaroma and Carafa Special III) would give a sweet, thick flavour to the beer, but instead it has a crisp, round-bodied flavour without being sweet (our brewers Alex and Rob described it like eating a piece of brown toasted bread spread with a spicy orange marmalade). We ended up dry-hopping it with more traditional German hops, Magnum and Mittlefrüh, which helped the nutty malt flavours really shine through. With an ABV of 6.6% and a gorgeous amber-orange colour, we’re not sure if there’ll be enough left to sell outside the Brewery Bar – we love it that much.

Keg @ Record Cafe, Bradford. Deep amber colour with a small head. Has an interesting mix of pale malts and tropical fruit flavoured hops. Peach and mango are here amongst many.

Keg at CASC. It pours clear deep amber with a decent yellow-white head. The nose is soft, juicy, big malty action, orange muffin, fruit cake, peachy, apricot and candy. The taste is crisp, bitter-sweet, juicy, orange muffin, stewed citrus, mango, light spice, minerals, tangerine, fruit cake, alcohol boost, pine needles and peppery spice with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Decent enough marzen.

Keg at the brewery tap room. Dark orange / amber coloured pour with a lasting thin cream head. Aroma is subdued, nutty grains, semi sweet malt. Not much on the nose at all. Flavour is composed of weird veg matter and nutty malts, malts are a bit stale or something. Some spicy hop character. Bit tangerine. Weird one. Palate is medium light, refreshing, highish carbonation.

Euston Tap. Keg. Almost clear amber beer, tidy pale cream colour head. Palate is smooth and semi dry. Good fine carbonation. Smooth malts, a modicum of dry creamy sweetness. Mild marmalade. An odd skunky thing going on, not quite hop skunk, curious and a little off putting. Sweet orange peel and a trace of tropical fruits on the fairly bitter finish. Spicy bitter linger. Odd and I could not drink much of it.

Keg at the hanging bat. Pours clear dark amber with a thin white head. Aromas of soy, herbs, toffee. Taste is more of that odd oriental food note, herbs and soy/salt. Expected it to be sweeter. Interesting.
