Caramel and toffee notes abound in this deep copper-colored American Barleywine-style but alongside toasted malt and a hint of ripe dark fruits. Old Numbskull showcases malt sweetness, intense American hops, and an aggressive bitterness. Extremely well-balanced, the full-bodied mouthfeel and assertive hop profile leads into a deceptively smooth finish. Old Numbskull can be enjoyed now or laid down for years to come.

Excellent barleywine, nothing life-changing but hitting all the notes you want in a heavy-duty malt monster. Drips with caramel, toffee, and dried fruit notes, countered by a moderate pine bitterness laced with modest citrus and a warm, boozy back end. Pours a lovely red-brown with a permanent white head and tons of lace. Caramel-slathered bread nose is delectable. Thick, chewy texture screams barleywine. Tasty.

Bottled 1/23/14. Very nice! Malty, some hops, good balance. Thick and flavorful. Almost woody notes. Mellowed nicely.

(Bottle) Dark amber colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, hoppy nose with notes of resin, caramel, toast, dark rye bread, pine needles, citrus, some burnt rubber and a touch of alcohol. Malty, hoppy taste with caramel, toffee, orange peel, resin, dried fruit, toasted rye bread, a touch of chocolate and a finish with a generous citric, resiny bitterness and a warming touch of alcohol. Full body, with a certain sweetness. Solid and well made American style barley wine, with generous amounts of resiny/citric hops and a solid malt profile to back it up. Great beer!

75cl bottle. clear brown, small offwhite head. mild subdued well blended aroma of malts, toasted bread, booze, dark bitter caramel. flavor is malts, fainter toasted bread, fainter dark bitter caramel, also faint dried fruits. The bnalance between flavors is really well done. while the flavor appears rather simple, it is in fact on further inspection very layered and well composed, most things balance out and do not overcome the overall flavor. this is soft.. well composed, gourmet food, i mean gourmet beer. A great sipper, a great barley wine.

This one pours from 750ml foil wrapped bottle a deep copper with a 2 finger head of foam that shrinks to about a 1/2" solid layer and there's some decent lacing.
The smell at first is all hops...both citrus and pine. A few more whiffs reveal some caramel malt in the background.
The taste is strongly flavoured both with the hops and the malt. Caramel malt is nice and sweet and the hops impart some citrus and some pine that cuts into the sweetness but I think the malt is ruling it here. I'm also getting some notes of some dark fruit and a bit of molasses..pretty darned nice and the alcohol is hidden pretty well too. Just some warming after the swallow.
The mouthfeel is medium full to full, the carbonation is medium-light, and it finishes on the bitter side with a fairly long aftertaste.
I like this BWSA and I can see why it's listed as an English style because of how the malt character plays center stage. I'd drink it again, no problem.

Strangely light like partial solar eclipses, in both aroma and taste. Amber clear pour with ok head. Caramel and some oak. Lots of booze. Not a sugary mess at least. Pretty easy drinking. Tap at Rustico.

On tap. Pours a cloudy brown with moderate head. Aromas of doughy malts, brown sugar, herbs and grass. Flavors of same with additional dry resiny hops, grainy raisins and alcohol. Solid though not top 50.

Taster at Rogues Convention Center during the Alesmith Canadian Sales start event with Slack guys. Pours a hazy amber with a tan head. Aroma is candied tropical fruits, with mango and citrusy notes, quite fresh. Similar taste. Very good.
