Bacchus Flemish Old Brown surprises with a taste reminiscent of wine and offers a beautiful balance between sweet and sour. This beer impresses through both its sourness and the slight touch of caramel brought by the roasted malt. However, its sourness is less pronounced than the sourness of other Flemish red-brown beers. Therefore, Bacchus Flemish Old Brown is a very refreshing beer with a pleasant aftertaste. A beer full of character and history!

Sample from bottle, Glunz Beer Expo, April β10. Brown in color, but a little clearer than the sour brown ales Iβve known. A little bit of foam from the bottle. Lightly tart smell. At 5% abv (the description I have says it is), this is directed to the table instead of the cellar. A tart cherry flavor, not overwhelming, but itβs matched up to the malt to produce just a nice bit of sweetness, and with tartness again rather than any bitterness. Very well made. Goes down nicely, like a Berliner Weisse.

Location: Draft at Rattle 'N' Hum, 7/25/10
Aroma: The nose of some sour fruits, yeast, and a little spice
Appearance: It pours a hazy reddish color with scatted lace from the off-white head
Flavor: The taste is similar to the nose, sour, fruits, and malts
Palate: The body is light-medium, with a decent mouthfeel
Overall Impression: I thought this one was decent. It is a solid sour beer, but not special.

Bottle (which claims a bottled on date (should be a bb date) of 090414). Pours with a minimal off-white head over a hazed brown body. Red wine, raspberries, brown sugar, lacto, sour, earth, cherry pits. Taste is sour, wine, jammy, only a little bit of the sweet-meaty taste I hate is some traditional Belgian Flemish reds/browns. Lots of fruit notes. Not super sour, but maybe a 5/10. Dry. Pretty good. Light bubbles.

375ml bottle at The Bayou
Appearance: Dark brown with a reddish tint, small off-white head
Aroma: Tart fruits, Belgian candy
Taste: The aroma and taste are totally different to me. The taste is sweet malts up front then tart fruits (cherries)
I really like this sour. Very clean, crisp and refreshing. The sourness is very light in both the aroma and taste.

A decent sour, though a bit mild. This one is mostly acidic, but the beer is rather light in flavor and feel, at least relatively fresh, so itβs still fairly easy to drink. Bacchus pours a deep red with a shade or two of brown, small ecru head. Aroma is too mild but there are some nice sweet and sour cherry notes and hints of grain. Flavor is a bit better with more acidity, a light funk and mild malt. Feel is a bit thin, which isnβt really a big surprise, but itβs still a fairly easy beer to drink.

Bottle from Monument in Concord, CA. Pours brilliant, medium ruby with a tall beige head. Mildly tart and acidic aroma. Medium body with almost fizzy carbonation. Flavor is only lightly tart and acidic. Rather fresh and fruity. A bit astringent. Seems to be a bit woody in the finish. Bit like a popsicle stick. Light and refreshing. Would substitute for a rose sparkling wine - minus some AB.

12.7 ounce bottle from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a clear ruby color with a large creamy head. Thins fairly quickly to a half finger layer of head. Decent lacing. Aroma of dry earthy funkiness with a tannic red wine vibe. Taste is very smooth. Dry red wine funkiness with a sweet sugary note. Medium bodied.

Pours deep mahogany into a snifter. Tan head quickly recedes to nothing. Sour cherry and oak aromas. Tart and dry upfront with cherry turning to a lasting lactic finish.

(wrapped bottle) Clear, effervescent dark ruby coloured hue with a thick beige foamy head. Sour and fruity aroma of red berries and cherries with a light notes of sweet malt. Mildly sour flavour, light bodied with a smooth mouthfeel. Rather slim malty taste with soft fruity notes; moderately dry and slightly acidic finish with a balancing malty sweetness. A stronger body would be appropriate, otherwise a pleasent Oud Bruin. 11.IX.09
