A vigorous fermentation is followed by a long maturation – the beer is brewed in February and then released on the unsuspecting public. A densely rich beer with a dark brown head, it has coffee and berry like aromas and a velvet mouth feel. This beer commands respect and deserves to be savoured slowly.

Bottle from an off licence in Kew, London. Poured black with a halo of tan head. Strong burnt malt aroma with notes of plums and marmite. Full mouth feel. Slightly salty initial flavours with some Oxo, molasses and dark grain. Finish was earthy with some burnt toast mixed with black cherry sweetness.

Bottle shared at a tasting at Beer Market Jaffa. Black with a tan head. Aroma of lots of dark chocolate, some liqueur pralines and dark fruits notes. Bittersweet flavor with chocolate, roastiness, a bit of liqueur, dark fruits notes, an alcoholic edge and a slightly more bitter finish. Medium to full-bodied. Very nice.

Cask @ Old Gate, Hebden Bridge. A very strong stout, drinkable given its strength but it does hit you after a while. Black with very little head. Surprisingly it’s quite light in character with more stated roasted malt aroma than taste.

33 cl bottle vintage 2011 @ home, BBE info not readable
Aroma has soy sauce, licorice and toffee. Flavour has licorice, some weird grassy notes, toffee, Englis hops, hints of ash, hay and soy sauce. Unpleasant floral notes and alcohol do occur at the end of the glass. Quite thin for a 10,5% ABV imperial stout. A disappointment from a good brewery.
