Bottle at home in London. It’s at least six months old. Opens with a hiss and I learn, upon pouring, that this beer is quite over-carbonated. It pours deep brown with a massive, glass-filling brown froth. The aroma is dominated by ashy roast, some stones, earth, some berries. Light to medium sweet flavor with aggressive charcoal, bitter baking cocoa, scorched earth, a bit of grass, orange rind. Light bodied with lively carbonation. Bitter finish with lasting, tongue-kicking ash, lots of woody dryness, grass, earth, cocoa. Eh, a bit harsh.

Bottle from Beer Gonzo. It pours black with a thick light tan head. The nose is earthy roast, charred wood, umami, salted liquorice and dark chocolate. The taste is bitter, earthy, ashy, hard roast, umami, burnt toast, pepper and coffee with a rather dry finish. Medium body and foamy carbonation. Very savoury indeed, perhaps overly so.

Bottle from Valhalla’s Goat. Black body with a medium beige head. Light lacing. Aroma of coffee, stainless steel and rubber. Flavour of dark chocolate, muted citrus notes and a dry, ashy finish. Medium body with a frothy texture. Soft fizz. Not bad, but I’m not sure if it all quite comes together. Maybe not the best hop type for the style.

Bottle from The Bottle Shop and drunk at home. Black very dark brown beer with lasting thick tan head. Quite a thick malty chocolate stout like you would expect from an export stout. A little woody on the aroma, but the malty thick body works well. Some hop on the finish, good condition, tasty enough. Quite pleasant to be honest.

7th December 2014
Opaque dark brown beer, good fluffy pale tan head. Palate is light and dry with decent fine carbonation. Airy dark malts, little dry roast bitterness. Whispers of coffee and unsweet dark chocolate. A mild creamy sweetness creeps in before the dry finish. Roasty linger. Rich but utlimatelly standard stuff.

Bottle from Brewer’s Droop, Bristol. Jet black and opaque, with a long-lasting tan head. Big roasted notes, some plain chocolate, a touch of dark fruit, finishing with a citrus hop kick. Excellent.
