10th March 2014
Craft Clerkenwell. Cask. Clear deep amber beer, small tan head. Palate is smooth and semi dry. Modest carbonation. Smooth tangy malts - brown malts. Tangy dried fruits, whisper of dry malt cream. Very light touch of smoke and bubblegum esters. Dry finish. Tasty enough and pretty drinkable but again, could be livelier in the palate.

Cask at The Craft Co. Clerkenwell. Deep clear amber color, small beige head. Light smokeyness and dark fruits in the nose. Light-bodied. Dark fruits, wet wood and light earthy hoppyness in the flavor. A bit more low-key than expected, but balanced beer.

Cask, gravity at Derby, Roundhouse, NWAF, Saturday 22nd February 2014 Pours black with just a few stray bubbles on the perimiter. A little smokey fudge on nose, the roastiness is slight, just a touch warm perhaps, smokiness showing more with a little clackiness in mouth and touch if fruit. Good but not my favourite from Hopcraft, served a tiny bit warm. Loz said I was being too tight with my ratings again and that this much better than 3.3, she’s right I have upped it a little. Keg at the Earl of Essex - London. Pours clear amber-brown with a thin, tan cream head. Mild smoke in the nose along with burnt plastic and mud. Light sweet flavor, quite muddled, more mud, burnt plastic, faint smoked ham, some swamp water. Light to medium bodied with fine, soft carbonation. Muddy finish with more swamp water, background smoked malts, melted plastic, earth. Very little goodness here.

Cask at The Bow Bar. Pours dark brown with a little bubbly head that doesn’t hang around. Aromas has light smoke and treacle. Taste has the same - very light on the smoke, perhaps chocolate there too. Clean finish. Not bad.

On cask at the Bow Bar winter beer festival. Appearance -black with a hint of chestnut around the edges. Nose - dark chocolate with a smoky edge. Maybe a little liquorice. Taste - liquorice going into charcoal. Dark chocolate finish. Palate - medium bodied with a dry silky texture and a balanced finish. Overall - nice ale.
