On gravity at the Commercial Rooms (JDW), Bristol, October 2013. Dark brown in colour with a slight, off-white head. Drinking chocolate powder, with a hint of roast, suggestion of sulphur and slightly dry finish. Fine.

Cask at the Blackfriars (not a JDW!), Inverness, 19/10/13. Extremely dark mahogony brown with a moderately sized tan head. Nose is earthy, bready malt, light toffee. Taste comprises light cocoa, hint of coffee, toffee fudge, very light roast. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, light roast in the finish. Mediocre porter lacking any depth to the flavour.

Cask at The Moon Under Water (JDW), Watford on 19 October. Poured a dark ruby, near black with a dense beige head. Aroma of black syrup, coffee and dates. Flavour is far too sweet for my liking, syrupy with molasses and some tobacco. Sweetened coffee and a little roast malt on the palate. Looked very good, but really not my taste.

Cask at Fox & Hounds, Chelsea. It pours deep ruby with a medium beige head. The nose is earth, roasty, toast, dark fruit and chocolate. The taste is smooth, roast, cocoa, coffee grinds, earth, dark fruit, dried berry and light acidity with a dry finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Straight-forward and pretty drinkable stuff. Alright.

Cask at the Old Manor (JDW), Bracknell. Deep mahogany in colour with a cream head; cappuccino aroma; silky in the mouth with a sweet chocolate biscuit taste; and a dry, somewhat prickly, finish. A rather flat and one-dimensional version of a porter.

Cask at the Pommeler’s Rest, JDW - London. Pours clear brown with a frothy beige head. The nose holds toasted leaves, subtle cocoa and semi-ripe fruits. Light sweet flavor with dried fruits, cigarette ash, dirt, leaves. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Dry finish with toasty and dry bread, more dried fruits, some berries, earth, tobacco and faint cocoa. A touch watery but what’s here is decent.
