Our beer for the inaugural ‘Rainbow IPA challenge 2013’. Made with a pale golden promise malt base, and our house yeast, we then used litre after litre of pure blueberries in fermentation and dry hopped the beer with berry like Vanguard/Willamette and citrusy Chinook hops. A deep red colour with an inviting off white head, the flavor is full of characteristic blueberry fruit with a crisp and drying berry-skin finish. Don’t end up like Violet!

Keg at King William IV Rainbow Event. It pours deep amber with a small white head. The nose is juicy berry, orange, grapefruit, toast and faint herbal aspect. The taste is crisp, orange, grapefruit, mild acidity, berry, metallic twang, grassy/herbal notes and decent bitterness towards the finish. Medium body and average carbonation. A bit sub-standard for Magic Rock, but alright nonetheless.

Keg at the Rainbow IPA event, King William IV, 21/09/13. Dark amber with reddish hues, thin white head. Nose is summer fruits, raspberries, berry fruits, light hop bill and toasty malts. Taste follows, berry fruits, blueberries, raspberries, grass, subtle hops peeping through. Medium bodied, fine carbonation. Ok - IPA ?

Keg at The Hanging Bat. Pours hazy red-tinged amber with a small white head. Aroma has some berry fruits, light hops. Taste is quite bitter, and finishes very dry. Bit too dry. OK.

Tap at Sheffield Tap. Hazy, dark amber with a purplish tinge. Big, frothy white head. Aroma is grapefruit, a hint of red fruit. Has a metallic edge to it, too. Taste is bitter grapefruit. Bitter to the point of harshness, in fact. The metallic edge makes it’s presence known at the end. Didn’t like this at all.

Rainbow IPA mini event at the King William IV. Keg. Lightly hazy red - amber beer. Small white head. Light fine carbonation in the mildly crisp palate. Semi sweet dry malt. Interesting mix of lightly citric hops with a blueberry trailing edge. Mild hop bitterness. Finishes minerally crisp. Not bad, if slightly confusing.

On tap at Holborn whippet. Hazy red thin white head. Some fruit on aroma. Fruit in the mouth is what? A bit thin maybe. Not the world’s greatest fruit beer. In fact a little poor imo
